BLOCK BRAKES

1. The hand brake shown in the figure has an average pressure of 600 kPa
across the shoe and is 50 mm wide. The wheel runs at 150 rpm and the
coefficient of friction is 0.25. Dimensions are in millimeters. Determine
the following:
a) If x = 150 mm, what should the actuating force be?
b) What value of x causes self-locking?
c) What torque is transferred?
d) If the direction of rotation is reversed, how would the
answers to parts (a) to (c) change?

2. An external drum brake assembly shown has a normal force P = 1000 N

acting on the lever. Dimensions are in mm. Drum radius is 300 mm.
Assume that coefficient of friction f = 0.25 and maximum contact pressure
p = 1.25 MPa. Determine the following from long-shoe calculations, with
pivoted blocks:
a) Free-body diagram with the directionality of the forces
acting on each component.
b) Which shoe is self-energizing and which is de-energizing?
c) Total braking torque in N-m
d) Pad or shoe width as obtained from the self-energizing shoe
(deenergizing shoe width equals self-energizing shoe width) P= 1000 N
e) Pressure acting on the de-energizing shoe.

3. The shoes on the brake depicted in the figure subtend a 90o arc on
the drum of this external pivoted-shoe brake. The actuation force P
is applied to the lever. The rotation direction of the drum is
counterclockwise, and the coefficient of friction is 0.30. All
dimensions are in inches.

Assume that the blocks are pivoted against their respective levers.
a) If the friction power is 25 hp, and the dimension e = 20
in., what actuating force P is required for this brake at
500 rpm?
b) The same as (a), except that rotation is clockwise.

4. A double-block brake is to be designed for a torque rating of 500 ft-lb at 600

rpm. Consider a contact angle of 120º for each shoe and a coefficient of friction
of 0.35. The brake is to be designed for severe operating conditions and is to be
installed in a location that has poor ventilation. Assume the necessary
dimensions for a double-block brake setup (similar to the last example in
lecture). Specify the drum diameter, the block width and the actuating force S
required for the specified torque rating.

(Note: This is an open-ended problem and the results depend much upon your
assumptions)
