COURSE TITLE : Materials Adaptation and Development

COURSE CODE : BESL2173

COURSE DESCRIPTION : The course provides student-teachers with the knowledge


and skills of evaluating and selecting course materials
suitable for the syllabi to be taught. It also deals with the
skills and competencies for adapting and developing new
content material suitable for the level of students and
curriculum requirements in the teachers’ own teaching
context.

COURSE OBJECTIVES : This course aims to achieve the following objectives:


• To engage students to select and evaluate course
materials suitable for the English language curriculum.
• To develop new content material suitable for students
and syllabus.

LEARNING OUTCOMES : On successful completion of this unit, students should be


able to:
1. evaluate course materials for the English language
curriculum with evaluation criteria

2. use different discourse types in material design,


development and adaptation to foster learners’
creativity, curiosity and interaction amongst one another

3. create new content materials suitable for the level of


students and curriculum requirements in the teachers’
own teaching context

ASSIGNMENTS:

Response Paper (30%)

Task

You will be assigned ONE of the following English language teaching materials, from the pages of a
digital coursebook which can be downloaded from the LMS folder “Response Paper Materials”.
Based on the material, write a response paper to evaluate the reading and writing activities in the
material in terms of suitability and .effectiveness. Provide recommendations for improving the
material.

a) Material 1: Unit 12

b) Material 2: Unit 14

c) Material 3: Unit 15

d) Material 4: Unit 18

The soft copy of the response paper is due on 21st February 2024 (Wednesday), 11p.m.

Structure

Your response paper should include:


1. An Introduction section that provides a brief overview of the reading and writing activities in
the material (e.g., the source, the proficiency level, the topic/scope, the approach, etc.). Include
citations (between years 2014 and 2024).
2. A Discussion section that describes the theories and approaches used in the development of
the reading and writing activities in the material, discusses strengths and weaknesses of the
reading and writing activities in the material, and presents the recommendations for improving
these reading and writing activities in the ESL context. Include citations (between years 2014
and 2024).
3. A Conclusion section that presents a summary of your paper.
4. A References section that lists all the works cited in your paper.

The main content of your paper should be about 2000 words long. The word count merely serves
as a guideline for the expected breadth and depth of your paper. Assignments that are between
1800 and 2200 words are within the acceptable length.

Task

Develop ONE (1) material for teaching each of the following:


a) listening skills
b) speaking skills

Discuss the approaches and/or criteria of developing these materials. The teaching of grammar and
vocabulary should be incorporated in your materials. You may create the materials, or adapt the
existing materials from coursebooks. Materials adaptation should be creative and original, and
you have to cite the sources of the materials. The materials should be for the same proficiency level
or year group.

In your materials, incorporate technology and/or blended learning. Justify how you tie in
technology and/or blended learning with the materials.

The soft copy of your assignment is due on 8th April 2024 (Monday), 11p.m.

Structure

Your project paper should include:


1. An Introduction section that provides a brief overview of the materials that you create or
adapt for teaching listening skills and speaking skills, and incorporating the teaching of
grammar and vocabulary, technology and/or blended learning (e.g., the source(s), the
proficiency level, the year group, the topic/scope, etc.). Include citations (between years 2014
and 2024).
2. A Discussion section that describes the approaches and/or criteria used in the development or
adaptation of the materials, evaluates strengths and limitations of the materials based on the
criteria of materials evaluation of your choice, presents the recommendations for improving
these materials, and justify how you tie in technology and/or blended learning with the
materials. Include citations (between years 2014 and 2024).
3. A Conclusion section that presents a summary of your paper.
4. A References section that lists all the works cited in your paper.
5. An Appendices section that includes the materials that you create or adapt, original
materials (that you use for adaptation), etc.

The main content of your paper should be about 2500 words long. The word count merely serves
as a guideline for the expected breadth and depth of your paper. Assignments that are between
2250 and 2750 words are within the acceptable length.

Task

In 7 minutes, present your project findings, using PowerPoint slides.

The presentation will be carried out in one session on 20th and 27th March 2024.

The soft copy of your PowerPoint slides is due on 19th March 2024 (Tuesday), 11p.m.

adapt for teaching listening skills and speaking skills, and incorporating the teaching of
grammar and vocabulary (e.g., the source(s), the proficiency level, the year group, the
