Drop Everything and Read! It is always magical in the world of
reading. Starting January 12, 2024 as per DepEd memo 001 every Friday will be dedicated to the Catch up Friday initiative, where the sole focus will be on teaching children to read. It also aims to boost learner’s literacy and foster their love for reading. It is an avenue for learners to catch up on their lessons and improve their overall learning experience and to address learning gaps among grade school among grade school and high school students. As a grade 5 students I believe that this move is a step in the right direction. However, the effectiveness of this program requires effort, sincerity and collaboration between teachers and parents. First, Parents are often a child first and most influential teachers and they can foster a love of reading by reading to their children. Teachers on the other hand play a key role in developing reading skills and comprehension. Second, this Catch Up Friday program aims to develop not only in reading but also to become effective, productive and functional individuals in the society. Parents and Teachers commitment and involvement have a great impact. The main purpose is to leave no student behind in their educational journey. To sum up with, if we want to build a generation of lifelong readers, we must inspire students to fall in love with reading. Let support the program of DepEd Catch Up Friday to instill love for reading and Above all minimize or eradicate slow or nonreaders in school.
