I GROW BY READING

(To reflect and to reconsider quality education through reading comprehension)

Author : Orlando Navalesca Jr., T-1

There is no such thing as to promote quality education without correct, full

understanding of what has been taught and what has been learned. There is
listening, writing, speaking, and the most controversial among these is reading – a
major concern in the educational system of the country. Reading, it is, has been
taken for granted for years because, undeniably, students are hooked up with social
medias, wherein, a time to read is no longer a must.

Reading is very important because it is how we discover new things. Books,

magazines and even the Internet are great learning tools which require the ability to
read and understand what is read. A person who knows how to read can educate
themselves in any area of life they are interested in. With this, let it be developed
in an early stage of his life, most especially in the endeavors of learner's progress
in school.

It is with this process and with the goal of Department of Education to

produce graduates that are globally competitive, developing and enhancing reading
skills is a must, and it is our aim for quality education is to reflect and to reconsider
the domino effect of reading, if holistically done. Our school has established
CVNHS students as Certified Readers through eliminating and lessening non-
readers among the Junior High School (particularly Grade 7 and 8). Also, it is
hoped that it can create a turning point in the school where all students hopefully
will be able to develop effective reading skills and enjoy reading for different
purposes, and that, we could minimize the hurtful reality among Filipino students
who are non-readers.

There is no transparent result for quality education if learners have

poor comprehension to all the given topics in schools. The only way to hit the
target is to fully realized the DepEd’s Mission and Vision towards quality
education. To make it happen , Enhance the reading ability of the students, develop
among students the importance of reading, increase their comprehension level,
creating an ease of lesson delivery among subjects, and increase student's
performance.

Its outcome will be beneficial among the non-readers by turning them into
good readers and by increasing their comprehension level through recognizing and
decoding life’s lessons. It is therefore, projected that there will be positive result in
student's participation in other subject areas, since they are likely to be motivated
to participate in the class lectures and activities since most of the subjects require
comprehension.

It is not only in terms of sending them to schools everyday and let the daily
routine of responding through paper and pen method. It is not only in terms of
giving them homework and projects, which practically done by Google or
Wikipedia. It is not only in terms of whole day practice for play presentation,
wherein, they focus more on memorization and without realizing his role. It is not
only in terms of taking the quarterly examinations because its mandatory. Let us
help them see the real picture of life that they will understand things
comprehensively to give solutions to situations. To let them reflect and to
reconsider that comprehension is far better than any thing else towards quality
education, and to survive life after all.
