I. INTRODUCTION
It is a known fact therefore that the principal cause of misery and poverty in
Asia is illiteracy. And I do believe that unless a school have made the children
illiterate, they have not done so much to help these children in their struggle for a
better life. The question is “Who are the literates?”They are those who can
effectively communicate their ideas both in speaking and writing. They are those
who can express themselves with clarity and understood by people. One of the
most important problems of our school today is the improvement of the quality
of instructions. Could be the K to 12 Curriculum help solve this problem? But such
improvement of the quality of instruction depends in the measure upon the
children’s ability to read and to comprehend various printed materials.
Even though the children knows how to read and interpret these materials,
they are practically barred from learning effectively the other subjects of the
curriculum. It is for this reason that I Came to think of making a study on the
comprehension among my Students at Darapanan National High School.
ll. BACKGROUND OF THE PROBLEM
For almost a year that I’ve been handling the English language and with the
observations I’ve made with our formal discussion in my subject area problems
arises as reading difficulties among students, with an utmost poor comprehensions
and recitations. Mispronunciations, repetitions, omissions, substitutions and non-
recognition of words were also observed.
This report aims to determine and to find out the reading difficulties
and poor comprehension among Grade seven Students. That it may due to poor
reading abilities of our students.
Because of the loss of our students desire in reading, their reading skills have
greatly deteriorated. Many of our students do not understand what they are reading about.
They lack understanding and expression. They could not summarize what they have read. The
result is an increasing number of students inadequately prepared for college and eventually job
IV ACTION MADE
It shows that after the observations made remedial measures is necessary. Time
allotment should also be made and teachers should not stop giving remedial measures.
The wide circulation of magazines would bring both good and bad virtues.
Reading magazines greatly affects children attitudes towards reading which brought
unimaginative reading and reading books has become distasteful to them. The existence of a
variety of communication gadgets, movies and televisions greatly affects our children study
habits. Poverty, indifference of parents, illiteracy among parents themselves, lack of follow-up
at home and maybe a poor instructions greatly contributes to the poor reading abilities and
comprehension of students.
With the present trend in our educational system wherein most of the products
of our high school students are found to be inadequately prepared for college, in similar
manner an increasing number of college graduates turned out to be inadequately prepared for
a job. It needs more studies to be done to enrich and revitalize the present curriculum. Only by
so doing will be assured of better, well adjusted and intelligent citizens of our country in the
future for they will be our leaders tomorrow.
VI RECOMMENDATIONS
This report will possibly recommends the following to help solve this problems. 1.)
Teachers should fill up their classrooms with visual aids to increase students appetite for
reading. 2.) Teachers should help students make their study schedules. 3.) More and vivid
motivations must be provided to arouse interest in reading. 4.) Both recognition and meaning
should be given emphasis in teaching English. 5.) Students must provide dictionary for the
better understanding of words. 6.) Teachers should devote time in reading for phonics, as
remedial period. 7.) Teachers from time to time must have a thorough practice on correct
pronunciation so that they can be the model of their class.
