Printer A and Printer B print at different rates.
1
(i) Printer A prints 32 pages at an average speed of x pages per hour. Write down, in terms of x, an
expression, for the number of hours it took to print the 32 pages. [1 mark]
(ii) Printer B prints at an average speed of (x + 2) pages per hour. Write down, in terms of x, an
expression for the number of hours it took Printer B to print the 32 pages. [1 mark]
(iii) Given that the time difference between the two printers is 15 minutes, write down an equation in x,
and show that it reduces to x2 + 2 x − 256 = 0 . [3 marks]
(iv) Solve the equation x2 + 2 x − 256 = 0 , giving your answers correct to 2 decimal places. Explain
briefly why you would reject one of the answers. [3 marks]
(v) Hence, find the time it will take Printer A to print the 40 pages, giving your answer to the nearest
minute. [2 marks]
4. [Maximum mark: 8]
An open rectangular tank of depth 80 cm has a horizontal base of length 50 cm and breadth 35 cm. A solid
metal sphere of volume 21 000 cm 3 rests on the base of the tank. 39 000 cm 3 of water is poured into the tank
at a rate of 65cm 3 / s and the sphere is completely submerged.
(a) Calculate how many minutes it takes for all the water to be poured in. [1 mark]
(b) Calculate
(i) the depth of the water in the tank, [2 marks]
(ii) the surface area of the sphere that is in contact with the water. [3 marks]
(c) The sphere is now removed from the tank, calculate the fall in the water level. [2 marks]
4 3
(Volume of sphere = r , Surface area of sphere = 4 r 2 )

A projectile was launched upwards from one of the windows of a vertical building. At any instant, the
horizontal distance of the projectile from the building is x metres and the vertical height of the projectile
above the ground is y metres. Some corresponding values of x and y are given in the following table.
x metres 0 1 2 3 4 5 6
(horizontal distance)
y metres 6 10 12 12 10 6 0
(vertical height)
(a) Using a scale of 2 cm to represent 1 metre on the x-axis and 2 cm to represent 2 metres on the y –
axis, draw the quadratic graph of y against x for 0 x 6 and 0 y 14 .
[3 marks]
(b) From the graph, estimate
(i) the vertical height of the projectile when the horizontal distance is 1.8 metres.
[1 mark]
(ii) the greatest height above the ground reached by the projectile. [1 mark]
(iii) the horizontal distance from the building where the projectile strikes the ground.
[1 mark]
2
(iv) the horizontal distance travelled by the projectile during the period of time when it is more
than 9 metres above the ground. [1 mark]
(c) Write down an equation in the form of y = ax 2 + bx + c where a, b and c are integers, relating the
horizontal and vertical distances. [4 marks]
