    1. Pulmonary edema can be caused by either hydrostatic pressure leading to interstitial edema and alveolar flooding, or permeability edema caused by diffuse alveolar damage. 2. Mixed edema results from both increased hydrostatic pressure and permeability changes, causing simultaneous interstitial and alveolar edema. 3. Pulmonary alveolar edema leads to air space opacification visible on x-ray as batwing shadows and air-filled bronchi becoming visible on air bronchograms due to surrounding alveolar opacification.
