Today, we are going to study about Musical Forms.
new skills
#1 Musical form is created when the different elements of
music in a composition are arranged and combined into
sections.
Form is the overall shape and structure of a piece of
music.
To give ideas form 3 things used:
REPETITION- take a melody and repeat it.
CONTRAST- bring a new idea or melody
VARIATION- change an idea or melody that we have
already heard.

Now, letters can be used to label the form of any piece

of music, from the simplest to the most complex.
A, B, C- musical ideas or melodies
AA= repetition
AB = contrast
AA’ = variation (prime)
If we label our musical materials, ideas, or sections
with the letters of the alphabet (A,B,C) we can show
how musical forms are created.

DIFFERENT MUSICAL FORMS

1. Unitary/Strophic form – contains only one section
which remains the same all throughout the whole
composition.
It is use mostly in popular, folk, religious and
Christmas carols.

Strophic form is represented by AAAA… If you were

creating a sandwich, all you would be eating is slices of
bread!

Examples: "LeronleronSinta,

2. Binary (AB)-made up of two

musical parts or has two different melodic ideas. The
first section is lablled as A while section two is labeled
as B.

B
Our sandwich will have two parts - bread and some
sort of filling.

Examples: Row, Row, Row your Boat,

3. Ternary – utilizes a three-part form represented by

(ABC) and sometimes, the third part is a repetition of
the first part represented by (ABA).
We finally have a traditional sandwich!

Examples: Ha, Ha, This Away

4. Rondo (ABACA) – is made up of five or more musical

parts with some repetitions.Rondo Form is like an
extra-long version of Ternary Form. The A section keeps
coming back after each new section of music. The basic
Rondo Form can be written as ABACA.
Our sandwich becomes much taller with rondo form
(think of a double or triple decker sandwich).

Examples: MaligayangAraw
