Definition

• Low oxygen tension.

• Inadequate oxygen pressure to meet metabolic needs.

• Insufficient oxygen supply.

• Poor utilization of oxygen due to interference

OTHERS

• Hypoxaemia. Inadequacy of oxygen tension in the blood.

• Abnormally low levels of oxygen in the blood.

• Oxygen deficiency in the blood( transport vehicle).

TYPES

• Hypoxic hypoxaemia

• Anaemic hypoxaemia

• Stagnant hypoxia

• Histotoxic hypoxia
HYPOXIC HYPOXAEMIA

• Low levels from source

• High altitude

• Low inspired oxygen concentration

• Hypoventilation

• Shunts

• Diffusion impairment
Anaemic hypoxia

• Haemoglobin level is low.

• Low oxygen carrying capacity of arterial blood.

• EG. Haemoglobinopathies

• Methaemoglobinemia

• Carbon monoxide poisoning.

Stagnant hypoxia

• Results from inadequate circulation.

• Low cardiac output state.

• Hypovolemia

• Anaphylactic shock
Histotoxic hypoxia

• Cytochrome( final pathway) are poisoned by cyanide.

• Sepsis

• Here oxygen is available but can not be utilised.

Cyanosis

• Blueness of skin, mucous membrane.

• 3g or 5g of deoxygenated haemoglobin per 100ml of blood.
