PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION
SPEECHES BASED ON DELIVERY
A. Be able state the nature, advantages, and disadvantages of the ff. types of speeches
according to delivery.
1. Impromptu Speech
Nature: Impromptu speech is the presentation of a short message without advance
preparation. Example of impromptu speech when someone is asked to “say a few
words” or give a toast on a special occasion. You have probably done impromptu
speaking many times in informal, conversational settings.
Advantages: (1) control of time, (2) control of word choice, and (3) when style is
critical—elegant language.
Disadvantages: (1) loss of eye contact and (2) loss of natural speaking style.
2. Extemporaneous Speech
Nature: Extemporaneous speech is a type of public speaking that involves delivering
a prepared but not memorized speech on a given topic. It is often used in academic,
competitive, or professional settings, where speakers have to present their
arguments, opinions, or information in a clear and persuasive way.
Advantages: better eye contact, a relaxed tone of voice, and the use of notes.
Disadvantages: extemporaneous speech requires a great deal of preparation for
both the verbal and the nonverbal components of the speech.
3. Manuscript Speech
Nature: Manuscript speech is completely written out and read word for word. It is
often a good style when you want to nail the specific wording and do not want to
make an error.
Advantages: The speaker has access to every word they've prepared in advance.
There is no guesswork or memorization needed.
Disadvantages: Lack of eye contact with your audience because you need to
keep your eyes on your words.
4. Memorized Speech
Nature: A memorized speech is when a speaker commits an entire speech to
memory.
Advantages: The speaker can deliver the exact repetition of written words
Disadvantages: The speaker is more focused on remembering the text of the speech
rather than communicating with the audience.
B. Prepare your own Speech in a simple paragraph in not less than 5 sentences. Choose
two from the topics below;
1.Recent Miss Universe 2023
2. Personal Transformation this 2023
3. Advantages/Disadvantages of Face-to-face classes
As we all know, we went through the pandemic in 2020 that's why we students
had virtual classes where we study through our smartphones and other devices that will
help us study and cope to do our school works and modules. When the pandemic ended
and the situation gradually improved in our country, the face-to-face classes resumed.
Face-to-face classes are a way that helps the teacher and student have more
active communication so that there is more effective teaching to the students. Also, it helps the
students to be more social active with their classmates and friends that results to a productive
and enjoyable learning experience. However, there is still disadvantages of the resumed face-to-
face classes. The students are starting again to cope the pressure caused by virtual classes and
start to develop their confidence to face new challenges in these face-to-face classes.
