Accounting 116-001 and -002: Managerial Accounting Foundations

Office hours (live) are Tuesday and Thursday from Noon to 2PM and by appointment. I
am available many other times than the scheduled office hours, so please request an
appointment if you are not available during office hours. I can meet live or via Zoom at
other times.
Course Description
This foundation of accounting course provides the concepts and tools for an
understanding of managerial accounting. You will learn tools and analyze information to
help in planning for the future with an emphasis on performance analysis and making
managerial decisions. Topics will include the role of managerial accounting in: product
and service costing, management decision- making and analysis, the planning and
controlling processes, and evaluating performance using tools such as absorption costing,
CVP analysis, budgeting, variance analysis, and segment reporting.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
apply and extend the concepts of managerial accounting to qualitative and
quantitative problems,
demonstrate a basic understanding of managerial accounting and decision making,
and use quantitative business thinking to make business decisions.
Course Purpose
The purpose of this course is to enable all business students to make business decisions
based on revenue and cost criteria that maximize form profits.
Statement of Expected Learning
You are expected to learn how to gather, apply and use quantitative data to make optimal
business decisions.

Assignments and Points
Assignments, due dates, and points are listed in the course schedule. Late assignments are
not accepted unless a serious emergency is documented prior to the exam time.
Homework is due 11:59PM the day before the chapter is tested.
Grade Scale
Letter grades are assigned as follows based on percentage of points earned to points
attempted:
931-1000 A 860-899 B+ 760-799 C+ 650-699 D+
900-930 A- 830-859 B 730-759 C 600-649 D
800-829 B- 700-729 C- 0-599 F
