RELIGIOUS ORGANIZATIONAL SYSTEM 2
Cultural diversity affects how healthcare providers approach the issue of care as the
Purnell and Fenkl (2019), culture is characterized by multiple factors that help understand a
aspect of a culture, and when preparing to provide patient-centered care, healthcare providers
must first understand the effect of religion on a patient's healthcare behaviors, choices, and
religious aspects of this population into the care process to achieve centeredness.
Different religious practices have a different effects on patient behaviors and actions.
For instance, for Catholics, prayer is one of the most fundamental aspects of their religion
and acts as a source of support. Leveraging such a belief in times of a worse diagnosis is
important as it helps the individuals from such a culture cope with such a diagnosis. There is
also a negative aspect of religion on practice. For instance, Jehovah's Witness believes that
organ donation and blood transfusion violate religious beliefs relating to the sacred nature of
human life. As noted by Swihart, Yarrarapu, and Martin (2021), indicate that healthcare
providers must be culturally competent to address religious issues and promote the nursing
practice. The organization system will be fundamental in enhancing one's ability to deliver
culturally-competent care by equipping one with knowledge of the system, its implications,
and how best to interact with patients from such a culture. Religious awareness will help a
nurse develop a culturally-sensitive care plan and focus on addressing the adverse influence
of religion on healthcare practices while using the strengths to improve care outcomes.
