KEY PRONUNCIATION
REVIEW LINKING
In English, words are written separately but are often said without pauses in
between them. This is why linking is such an important aspect of fluent
English. It will help you speak faster and sound more fluent.
In our previous lessons Yellow and Thinking out loud, we learned about
linking consonant-vowel and the two ways to link vowel-vowel.

1. Linking Consonant-Vowel
Linking consonant-vowel happens when one word ends in a consonant
sound and the following word starts with a vowel sound.
For example, we can find several linking sounds in Verse 1 of this song:

2. Linking Vowel-Vowel
Linking Vowel-Vowel happens when one word ends in a vowel sound and
the following word starts with a vowel sound.
There are two ways that we can link vowel-vowel:
a. Link Vowel-Vowel with the /w/ sound
The 1st rule in linking vowel-vowel is that if the first word ends in a rounded
vowel sound and the next word starts with any vowel sound, we add the
sound /w/ between them.
For example:

A rounded vowel is a sound that is pronounced with rounded lips, that is

your lips are round when you pronounce it. For example, like when
pronouncing the letter o or u, your lips have to come together to produce
the sound.
Below are some rounded vowels and words containing them.

Rounded vowels Words

/oʊ/ go, no, tow

/uː/ you, do, new

/aʊ/ now, how, allow

COMMON SPELLINGS OF ROUNDED VOWELS

/oʊ/ /uː/ /aʊ/

in go in do in now

o ew ow
so, ago, go knew, blew, flew how, cow, allow

oe oe
toe, Joe shoe

ow o
low, know, show do, too, two, who

b. Link Vowel-Vowel with the /y/ sound

When the first word ends in a smiling vowel sound (your lips are wide as if
you’re smiling) and the next word starts with any vowel sound, we add the
sound /y/ between them.
For example:

A smiling vowel sound is a sound that is pronounced with unrounded lips,

that is your lips are in smiling position.
Below are some smiling vowels and words containing them.

Smiling vowels Words

/iː/ see, he, me

/eɪ/ pay, day, play

COMMON SPELLINGS OF SMILING VOWELS

/iː/ /eɪ/
in he in say

e ay
she, me, be way, day, lay

ee ey
agree, tree, bee they, grey, obey

ACTIVITY 9
Listen again to the song and mark all the linking
consonant-vowel and linking vowel-vowel.
I keep a close watch on this heart of mine

I keep my eyes wide open all the time

I keep the ends out for the tie that binds

Because you're mine, I walk the line

I find it very, very easy to be true

I find myself alone when each day is through

Yes, I'll admit that I'm a fool for you

Because you're mine, I walk the line

As sure as night is dark and day is light You've got a way to keep

I keep you on my mind both day and night me on your side

And happiness I've known proves that it's right You give me cause for

Because you're mine, I walk the line love that I can't hide

For you, I know I'd even

try to turn the tide

Because you're mine, I

walk the line

THE PRESENT PERFECT TENSE

WHEN TO USE THE PRESENT PERFECT TENSE?
We can use the Present Perfect tense to describe different functions. In
today’s song, this tense is used to talk about things that started in an
unknown period of time in the past and continued up to now.
And happiness I've known proves that it's right.
You've got a way to keep me on your side.

HOW TO FORM THE PRESENT PERFECT TENSE

To form the Present Perfect, we use has/have + verb (past participle). Note
that whether to use ‘has’ or ‘have’ will depend on the subjects of the
sentences.

I live I have lived here for 24 years.
