Factors Contributing to Declining Enrollment Rates in BS Mathematics: A

Comprehensive Analysis of Educational, Socioeconomic, and Cultural Influences

INTRODUCTION

In the perspective of student who will be taking the higher education, selecting an

exact course can be intricate due to different majors whom are multi-faceted and could

bring new discovers and passion to the chosen path or career. This study will dive into

the depths of various knowledges, discoveries, and new ventures of career or passion

that students are partaking to achieve success. The juncture of choosing Bachelor of

Science in Mathematics opened a new array of possibilities to critical-thinking, problem-

solving, be keen-to-details and become much more realistic as this major has been

used for everyday life and routine. In the world of people who hungers for knowledge,

the BS Mathematics is one of the core components to pursue life situations, as we see

the world developing modernly, the silver-lining of usage of mathematics for everyday

life as increase its cause to fully understand and adapt new systematics for easy

understanding.

This case study sheds light on the complex web of factors that come together to

create the story of the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics decision. The choice to

pursue a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics is rarely a single one; rather, it's the result

of a confluence of pragmatic concerns, goals, and passions. This study aims to

disentangle the strands of impact by taking into account variables like individual

interests, society norms, and perceived career prospects that come together to

influence the academic trajectory of future mathematicians. Students who complete the

Bachelor of Science in Mathematics degree will have a thorough understanding of

mathematical concepts and how they are used in a variety of contexts. Students get an

exceptional opportunity to explore the intriguing realm of numbers, patterns, and logical
reasoning through the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics degree. This introduction

attempts to give a general overview of the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics program,

emphasizing the importance of the curriculum and the abilities it teaches students.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This inquiry aims to collect significant data to answer the following questions:

1. What are the reasons why some students decided to enroll in Bachelor of Science in

Mathematics based on the response of non-teaching staff?

2. What sort of factors influenced the decision of students to enroll in Bachelor of

Science in Mathematics?

3. What are some doable tactics or approaches to increase the Bachelor of Science in

Mathematics enrollment rate?

METHODOLOGY
Research design

This case study used qualitative design interviews to gather and collect data. A

well-conducted qualitative case study provides a good source of information on a

particular subject or problem (Kearney, 2001). The researchers used an unstructured

interview method to have a flexible, free-flowing conversation and communication

between the subjects and the interviewers to explore motivations, opinions, or

experiences, and to encourage dialogue.

Research Instrument

Data were collected using interviews. Each subject undergoes a one-on-one

unstructured interview with the researchers to collect more qualitative data. The data

was collected from various non-teaching personnel and government employees of

different educational institutes; this allows the researchers to validate their findings.

Data were analyzed to answer the research question and find the similarities and

differences among the answers of the subjects.

Participants

The samples for this study are 12 non-teaching personnel and government

employees from 11 different educational institutes, selected using purposive sampling. 6

males and 6 females whom the researchers are acquainted with participated in this

study.

Procedures

The first step in the procedure is the selection of participants for the study.

Purposive sampling was done because the researchers were looking for participants

with specific professions. After the selection, participants’ interviews were conducted

and recorded during the first week of December 2023. After the interviews were

completed, all the data were collected and compiled.

Data analysis

Extensive Interviews were conducted from the collected data to ensure the

accuracy and reliability of this caste study. The qualitative data were analyzed

thoroughly to provide an accurate conclusion.

Result and Discussion

This chapter presents the results and discussion of our case study and a brief

description of why many students don't pursue a BS in Mathematics. This case study

aimed to understand why some students choose to pursue a course other than BS

Mathematics. Here are some questions we're provided:

1. What are the reasons why fewer students decided to enroll in BSM based on the

response of non-teaching staff?

2. What sort of factors influenced the decision of students to enroll at BSM?

3. What are some doable tactics or approaches to increase BSM enrollment?

A detailed description of the results of the data gathered through interviews is provided.

It is a challenging course, involving complex calculations and problem-solving. Many

people are unaware of this course. Since this is a new program that is offered by the

College of Arts and Sciences.

The administrative sector of all Senior High schools is not familiar with this course even

the students. People need to know what this course is all about. One reason why they

can't choose BS in Mathematics is a lack of interest in the subject because they aren't

good enough at math. They believe that this course doesn't provide any insight into

what specific jobs are available for those who take this course. Additionally, other

degrees may provide more opportunities or a better chance for a higher-paying job, so
students may choose those alternatives instead. They choose to be practical in taking

courses that will satisfy their aspirations in life.

Conclusion

In conclusion, students are hesitant to enroll in BSMATH because they have dou

bts about the course's potential for success.

Schools should provide a comprehensive explanation of the BSMATH program's subjec

ts, teaching methodology, and practical applications to address this issue.

Students can also be made to recognize the benefits of selecting this course by sharing

the success stories of BSMATH graduates and providing mentorship.

We can assist students in making more educated decisions regarding their educa

tion and future jobs by providing easily available information and highlighting successful

results.

Second, it's critical to ease concerns regarding the prospects of a BSMATH degree.

Success stories of BSMATH graduates should be featured by educational institutions in

cooperation with industry partners. These stories should highlight the graduates' varied

career paths and the contributions they have made across a range of sectors.
This not only helps students visualize possible career pathways after graduation,

but it also gives specific examples of how the course is relevant.

Additionally, career counseling services and mentoring programs can be quite helpful in

assisting students with their decision-making.

Insights and experiences from seasoned professionals or alumni can offer priceless vie

wpoints, allaying worries about the unknown elements of a BSMATH education.

Recommendation

To inspire students to enroll in a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics course, it is

crucial to highlight the versatility and real-world applications of a mathematical

education. Showcase the exciting possibilities for career paths in fields such as data

science, cryptography, finance, and technology. Emphasize the problem-solving skills,

logical reasoning, and analytical thinking that are honed through a mathematics

program, making graduates highly sought after in various industries. Additionally, offer

interactive and engaging introductory courses that demonstrate the practical

applications of mathematics, fostering an appreciation for its relevance in solving

complex problems. Encourage students to envision the role of mathematics as a

powerful tool that not only unlocks intellectual challenges but also opens doors to a wide

array of rewarding and impactful career opportunities.

Strategies to encourage enrollment in Bachelor of Science in Mathematics.

1. PROMOTION – Information dissemination to break the notion that this course is

only for those who are good in Mathematics;

2. GUIDANCE – monitoring of alumni and guiding graduates of BS Mathematics to

land a professional job

3. Focus on the perspective that a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics is best to

complement other science courses, especially in complex problem solving such

as in the field of Engineering and Technology.
