What are the most surprising natural features in the world? The biggest forest in the world is
the Amazon Rainforest. It has an area of over six million km2 and extends across nine South
American countries including Brazil, Colombia and Peru. It’s also one of the most populated
forests: one in every ten species on Earth lives in the Amazon! Sadly it is getting smaller each
year as people cut down trees illegally or make space for farmland. Mount Everest, in the
Himalayas, is the highest mountain in the world. It is 8,848 meters high. Mont Blanc, the tallest
mountain in Europe, is only about half that height. At only 50 million years old, the Himalayas
are much younger than the Makhonjwa Mountains in South Africa, formed of rocks dating as
far back as 3.6 billion years! But the longest mountain range in the world is the Mid-Ocean
Ridge System. Although it is over 65,000 km long, you can’t see it as it passes under every
ocean in the world.It is hard to imagine a hotter place that a desert, but in fact the world’s
biggest desert is Antarctica, which is also the coldest, driest and windiest continent. A desert
can be any place with very little rain. The largest hot desert in the world is the Sahara in North
Africa, but the hottest air temperature on Earth was officially recorded at Death Valley in North
America 56.7°C in the summer of 1913! Surprisingly there are six different types of fish in the
salty waters of Death Valley, including one of the world’s rarest, the Devil’s Hole Pupfish.
