PROBLEM BASED APPROACH DESIGN IN ORAL COMMUNICATION(Subject)
Students’ year level Grade 11
Lesson Topic Speaking Skills
Learning Objectives:
Step 1
1. Identify the strengths and weaknesses in speaking
2. Explain appropriate methods in presenting the problems
3. Create an activity that will enhance speaking skills

Step 2 Teacher Alex have been teaching for almost 5 months now in Santa Sofia
National High School. She observes that when she gave them task in regards
in writing, there were only minor mistakes on it and she can conclude that
there strengths is writing . On the other hand, she also observes that in terms
of speaking, there are five(5) of them are having difficulties to speak fluently.
As a teacher whose goal is to help students to hone their skills and be fully
equipped, what actions should teacher Alex do to address this problem?

Step 3 The teacher will introduce and explain adequately to the students what is
PBL, its purpose and importance through the use of her laptop in a
PowerPoint presentation.

Problem-based learning uses complicated, real-world challenges as the

classroom's subject matter, enabling students to build problem-solving
abilities and acquire concepts instead of just memorizing facts. PBL also
encourages teamwork, effective problem-solving, communication, and self-
directed learning. The lecturer or tutor typically plays a supporting role
during the activity, directing and supervising the groups of students as they
solve problems in groups.

The teacher will group the students into 3 and will be given different
scenarios that needs collaboration and to actively participate with their
groups.

Scenario 1: As a future English teacher who already knowledgeable in this

field, how are you going to enhance or what actions are going to do to
address the problems especially to those students who are having problems
on their speaking skills inside your classroom?

Scenario 2: There are two(2) students inside the classroom who doesn't
engage that much during group discussion/activity, now as a 21st century
teacher who already encountered different types of students, what are the
steps that are you going to do to successfully develop their collaborative
skills ?

Scenario 3: Most of the students in class 2-B are having difficulties in terms
of organizing their thoughts in essay writing. As a successful writer, what
advice/tips can you impart to help those students to hone this important skill?
PBL is a fundamentally static learning method that fosters and supports
students' competencies through a methodical process with explicit issues.
The focus is solely on a person's capacity to respond to difficulties since,
even if a scenario simulating a real-world clinical condition is adopted, the
Step 4 set framework of the scenario cannot be changed throughout learning.

The students are assigned to perform a role-play presentation in class.

Students will be grouped into three (3) groups composed of five (5)
members. The teacher will give each group a scenario that will challenge
their critical thinking skills. The teacher will give a thorough explanation of
what the students do with their groups.
1. The teacher should introduce the problem first, and students should
open a discussion within their groups’ right after identifying the
problem.
2. After making sure that students are clear about the problem they are
trying to work through, they should start planning, assigning each
member of the group to do the task, and they must cooperate and
participate.

With this activity, the students are not only practicing their speaking skills but
also understanding their perspectives, goals, motivations, and feelings when
they enter the situation they are trying to portray in their play.

Activity: Creating an Activity that Enhance Speaking Skills

The teacher will divide the students into 4 groups with 5 members. They will
Step 5 be given detailed guidelines on what are expected of them in creating an
activity that will enhance their speaking skills. The teacher will also give
thorough explanation about it. Furthermore, the students will present the
activity that they created in front of the class. After that, the audience will rate
their performance.

In able for the students to engage in different activities inside the classroom
Step 6 especially their speaking skills, as a teacher, you should first explain the
importance of speaking fluency, as well as the content so that they can be
motivated when they are talking in front and should also guide their speaking
process. An instance, a teacher gives students an activity like impromptu
speech that is supposed to be performed directly in front of their classmates
but suddenly there is 1 student who lacks confidence and can't perform well.
As a teacher what will you do? or how would you handle that situation? For
that, the teacher will encourage students to speak well and boost their
confidence so that they do won't feel nervous and shaky. Another way to help
the student to perform well in terms of speaking the teacher should use a
rubric. In using rubrics it must be integrated properly with a thorough
explanation so that students can aim for a standard and help teachers offer
balanced grading for all students.
