Situation: Ruby is a psychology graduate who wish to start a career in guidance counseling. Write a letter to
Ruby helping her to come up with an informed decision on how to become an ideal and effective counselor.

Task 3: Situationalysis
Directions: Read the following situation and identify if it is ethical or unethical behavior displayed by the
counselor. Write the answer in a piece of paper.

1. Counselor Caloy focuses only on counseling the rich and middle-class individuals in his private clinic. He
sometimes begs off if he finds the client poor or has nothing to give.

2. Counselor Sara Jane oftentimes, treats her students ordinarily. She has been hearing the same old
problems of her students for 3 months that she automatically nods to everything she hears, without even
really listening to her students.

3. The school asked counselor Marvin to create and implement a guidance program for career and drug
prevention. Marvin set up a freedom board to gather information and perception of the students as a whole
about their career and their knowledge of drugs. He also set up some survey questionnaires and fish-bowl
interviews for each class in the different levels.

4. Andie has been a counselor for 12 years but did not even bother to attend any seminars that will keep him
updated with the current trends in counseling.

5. Counselor Mai Mai do not only provide counseling to few, but to all. All information shared by her client,
including his or her identity, was kept secret.

In the area of confidentiality of the Code of Ethics, there is a portion of the client’s right to privacy. What if
the counselor, in his/her conversation with the client, found out that the client wanted to kill a certain person.
What will you do if you are the counselor?

2. From the given situation above, if given a chance to work as a counselor, do you think it will be easy for
you to follow and distinguish between the ethical and unethical behaviors of a counselor? Why?
