DIAGNOSTICS − ENGINE
DI5PF−02
CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
Misfire: The ECM uses the crankshaft position sensor and camshaft position sensor to monitor changes in
the crankshaft rotation for each cylinder.
The ECM counts the number of times the engine speed change rate indicates that misfire has occurred.
When the misfire rate equals or exceeds the count indicating that the engine condition has deteriorated, the
MIL lights up.
If the misfire rate is high enough and the driving conditions will cause catalyst overheating, the MIL blinks
when misfiring occurs.
DTC No. DTC Detecting Condition Trouble Area
Misfiring of random cylinders is detected during the any partic- S Ignition system
P0300
ular 200 or 1,000 revolutions S Injector
S Fuel line pressure
P0301 For any particular 200 revolutions of the engine, misfiring is
S EGR
P0302 detected which can cause catalyst overheating
S Compression pressure
P0303 (This causes MIL to blink)
S Valve clearance not to specification
P0304 For any particular 1,000 revolutions of the engine, misfiring is S Valve timing
P0305 detected which causes a deterioration in emission S Mass air flow meter
P0306 (2 trip detection logic) S Engine coolant temp. sensor
HINT:
When the 2 or more codes for a misfiring cylinder are recorded repeatedly but no random misfire code is
recorded, it indicates that the misfires were detected and recorded at different times.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
PREPARATION:
(a) Remove No.2 and No.3 cylinder head cover.
(b) Disconnect the high−tension cord from spark plug.
(c) Remove spark plug.
CHECK:
(a) Check the carbon deposits on electrode.
(b) Check electrode gap.
OK:
(1) No large carbon deposit present.
Not wet with gasoline or oil.
(2) Electrode gap: 0.8 mm (0.031 in.).
PREPARATION:
(a) Install the spark plug to the high−tension cord.
(b) Ground the spark plug.
(c) Disconnect injector connector.
CHECK:
Check if spark occurs while engine is being cranked.
NOTICE:
P03792
P22893 A00164 To prevent excess fuel being injected from the injectors
during this test, don’t crank the engine for more than 5 − 10
seconds at a time.
OK:
Spark jumps across electrode gap.
OK
ON PREPARATION:
(a) Remove instrument panel speaker No.1 panel (See page
#10 #20 #40 #50 SF−65).
(b) Turn ignition switch ON.
CHECK:
Measure voltage between applicable terminal of ECM connec-
#30 #60 tor and body ground.
OK:
