A HARMONY OF COLORS

PHAM TU'S SILK WORLD

By CHAU KIM DINH

Silk painting is a delicate art, an Oriental paint

ing par excellence. Its origin is perhaps as old and
as picturesque as the art of Chinese calligraphy. Silk
painting reflects the Oriental mind in its most subtle,
most delicate expression. For the artist in silk paint
ing tries to do the impossible: to make his thoughts,
his impressions, his direct observations of nature, of
the landscape and of people a picture which pleases
the eye and delights the mind by fine design , by
balanced composition, by delicate shades or harmo
nious colors.

But the essence of silk painting lies in the

" atmosphere " of the painting, the impression it
conveys to art lovers. I've seen many silk painting
exhibitions and I was favorably impressed with
works by Van Tho and other silk painters like Be
Ky, Tran Dac. Each artist has his own style. They
have tried each in his or her own way, his or her
mood, to tell something about the traditions, the
customs of Vietnam , its history or folk scenes, rural
or street activities. And each has his or her favorite
admirer in Vietnam and abroad .
But no Vietnamese silk painter can match Pham 12 gw me the

The artist's delicate brush and sensible mind have
combined and have harmonized Western methods
with Oriental subtle feelings, plus the secret of

Japanese classical masters. Pham Tu's talent is a
strange and happy mixture of the best traditions of

society. Pham Tu's admirers are favorably im
pressed with his “ fine sensitivity with an extremely
delicate touch . " Pham Tu's portraits " evoke sym
pathy" and a " feeling which transcends words."
Some hail him “a most profound artist.” On
Sunday December 17, 1972 , the first monumental
open air exhibit of Pham Tu was shown in the
villa of CARE Assistant Director P. A. Janes at Tran
Quy Khoạch, Tan Dinh, Saigon. Visitors to the
exhibit were greeted by the sound of recorded Viet

Besides Mr. Janes who was very very proud to

were impressed with some master works like Le

heart also went to smaller works such as Lotus
