Investigate the extent of soil erosion on living things and environment
(Taken from the Curriculum Guide) S5FE-IV-b-2(Day 4 of 5)

Key Concepts / Understandings to be Soil erosion cannot be prevented since this is naturally occuring in the environment. However, there are practices that can help control soil erosion and its
Developed harmful effects.
Natural vegetation is the simplest and natural way of controlling soil erosion which is allowing plants and trees to grow naturally without human
interference. Trees can also serve as windbreaks when they are planted in a straight path covering the crops from direct wind blows, thus lessening the
soil erosion that takes place.
Contour Plowing the farmer plows by following the contour or curves of the land instead of planting the crops up and down the slope so as to
slow down the flow of water and the soil that it carries.
Strip Cropping the method involves alternately planting different crops in strips.
Terracing is building a step - like ridges on the sides of hills and mountains. This movement prevents water from washing away a large amount
of the topsoil.
Crop Rotation is the planting of different crops on a particular land at different times. The method prevents soil erosion and at the same time
prevents the loss of minerals in the soil.
Rip Rapping is building rip raps or chunks of stones or rocks arranged on the edge of a slope. It does not just serve as a foundation but also a
ridge to control soil erosion. Rip rap can be seen on river banks and shorelines.
Forest the forest canopy, the uppermost layer of the forest where most tree branches and leaves are found, acts like an umbrella that lessens
the impact of rain on forest floor. This lessens the rate of soil erosion. The leaves that fall to
the ground cover the forest floor together with the naturally grown mosses. These coverings minimize the force of the surface runoffs so less soil is
carried away by water
