IGBA President 2022

A
introduction...
n
The President of the IGBA for the coming year
gives us an insight into how it all began and his
special connection with the UK.

I am 64 years old and married to Caroline, I have one

son, named Kevin, a grandson, and a granddaughter. I’ve
been keeping Glosters for more than 45 years now.
I bought my first Glosters from my neighbour, and later
on, he became a good friend. A few years later, when
I’d bought a car, my great friend the late Kris Claes and
I, went to see Derek & Margaret Moore, to buy birds.
Caroline and I still visit Derek and Margaret every year
and they’ve become really good friends over the years.
Along with my friend Marnix D’Hont, we have been
visiting the IGBA show for over 30 years.
Every year, I organize the Kris Claes Memorial Show,
where we get around 800 entries each year.
It’s a great honour to be elected as president of the IGBA
2022.
I wish everyone a good breeding season, and I hope to
meet you all at the IGBA Show 2022.
Stay safe !

Best Regards
Ludo

A Trying Year for the IGBA

by Richard Lumley Overseas & Patronage Secretary

2021 was once again for everybody a trying year with “The
Covid” effecting the whole world, yet I am pleased to say the
IGBA has overcome lots of things.

W e started the year with the sudden death of our membership sec Roger Wilton just when the
first yearbook was coming out and we had a massive amount of work to get things to turn around, so any
overseas member who either got his book late or did not get one please remember
what we had to do as Roger kept a lot of information in his head. Ian Allison
took over the job in the short term.

Thanks to a tremendous amount of work by the new committee

new things are now in place to help you in paying subs, and
keeping up to date with what is going on with the new
website.
Adrian Short is doing loads of work for the showing side of
the IGBA and I feel this is why you the overseas member
is making the IGBA the leading association in the bird
world.

Brexit came and at a stroke stopped us going to shows

in Europe and our members coming to the show
with birds, but I am pleased to say that the IGBA are
affiliated to the IOA-COM of which I am president and
we have made great progress with Defra in the past
year and things are coming together which will allow us
to get back to where we were, the only problem is there
will be a cost to be paid.

Our show went ahead in Oct with a new show hall and
after great work by the committee the weekend was a HUGE
SUCESS with 1000 birds entered and all these birds were from
the UK.
The show was won by Adrian Short with Best Corona and Best Consort
he became only the third member to do this. Two very nice birds. Clubs
from across Europe are still supporting us in the patronage side and we have 14
clubs in the scheme.

IGBA - Show Judge 2022
My lifelong interest in birds from a young lad being rescued

Steve Webb by the Fire Service from the battlements of Kenilworth Castle,
whilst in search of a jackdaw’s nest to the equally heady heights
of being appointed a judge for the I.G.B.A. has been quite a
colourful and eventful journey.

Bird nesting, a jackdaw as a pet and keeping budgerigars

in my youth eventually led me to the Cage Bird fraternity and I
started with a pair of Green Aderrats nearly seventy years ago.
I then moved on to Zebra finches and Gloster canaries in the
1970’s but was unable to continue after 1982 due to construc-
tion career demands.

On my retirement in 2009 I re-joined the Gloster Fancy

and have enjoyed immensely the last twelve years of breeding,
showing, and making and renewing friendships.
It is a great honour and privilege to be appointed a judge and
my warmest thanks go to those members who voted for me.
I look forward to seeing everyone in October and wish you all
a happy, healthy, and successful breeding season and showing
year.
May the joy and enthusiasm that we all share with
Gloster canaries flourish and continue.

I am 64 years old married with two daughters, both of which are

married giving me two son in-laws and 3 grandchildren. I live in
Delft which is in the southwest of the Netherlands.
Ruud Bakker
I have kept birds most of my life. As a child I had a small
aviary in the back yard. When I met my wife Ina, I had a small
apartment with a spare room for my birds, it’s then when I start-
ed with zebra finches and canaries; firstly, coloured canaries. A
few years later I changed to type canaries as I was taken with
the Gloster’s especially the corona at a local show. After that I
became a fan of that type, amongst others.

Over the years I have almost had all types of canary in my

shed. In 1989 I saw my first Borders and Fife fancy at a show
from the posture canary club in the south of Holland. After a
few years, I started in 1997, I studied to become a type canary
judge and I became a ANBvV judge type canary in 2000. Later I
also succeeded to become a COM-OMJ judge and have judged
at several World shows, Gloster and Border and Fife fancy shows
abroad, in Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Italy, and the UK and also
the Canadian and Malta Nationals. The birds I now have in my
shed are Gloster, Border, Fife fancy and Irish fancy.

I would like to express how priviliged I feel to have been asked

to be a judge at the 2022 IGBA.

IGBA - Show Judge 2022

Brian Durrell I have been breeding & exhibiting Gloster canaries for over 50 years and
have been on the judges panel since the age of 21.

I've been very fortunate to be invited to judge many of the leading all
Gloster shows in the UK, and over the years I have had the pleasure of
being invited to judge at a lot of shows in Belgium, Holland, Germany,
Italy and Malta.

I would like to thank the members who invited me to judge the IGBA
Club show, this will be my third time and I'm looking forward to judging
and meeting up with everyone at the show.

For those of you that do not know me I am Dave Rands, I have been
keeping Gloster Canarys for some 30+ years now and have had the Dave Rands
pleasure of Judging around the World. During this time i have met some
incredibly nice people and made some great friends along the way.

I am the club secretary and Show Manager for the Humberside Gloster
Club, it always gives me great pleasure putting on a succesful show each
year.

There is no better Honour than being asked to Judge the IGBA Show and I
am looking forward to the 2022 Show and meeting old friends again from
across the water. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very
good breeding season and a succesful Show.

IGBA - Show Judge 2022

Trevor Goddard Hi all can i start by saying thank you to the members who voted for
me to Judge this years show. It is an honour to be asked to Judge the
best all Gloster show in the World.

I started keeping birds at the age of 13 when someone asked me

to look after their Zebra Finches while they were away on holiday.
From then on I was hooked.

I started breeding/showing Glosters at the age of 17 and shortly

afterwards went into partnership with Bill Kingcombe for a while. In
recent times i am in partnership with Dave Rands. I hope everyone
has had a great breeding season and are all ready for a successful
show season I look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new
ones.

Adrian Short is only the third exhibitor to take the top two awards
in 35 years at this great Gloster show. He follows Paul Garner in
2003 and Barrie Alexander in 2004.

In the novice section this would be the fifth time the double
had been achieved with Ian Chamberlain taking both corona and
consort awards.

George Nichol’s strong team has been a major force at the IGBA over
the last five years without taking the top awards. However the two
leading coronas were to go head to head again at the North of England
Show a few weeks later with George’s variegated hen over turning the
result of the IGBA.

Adrian’s TPD hen is typical of the modern Gloster short and round
with a full body, whereas George’s hen is sweeter in comparison
and not so full in body. Two wonderful
hens that deserved the recognition at
the world’s leading Gloster show.

Statisticians Dream...

wondering who was better positioned
than who at IGBA2021, this will be the
answer to your musings.

Allocating First to Seventh place

awards 7 for first place down to
1 for seventh place, an interesting
fact is that Mr George Nicol came out
on top for the second show running.
George will have appeared at the top of
the Members Show leaderboard for the most
points allocated in 4 of the past 5 show years;
Mr Darren Gill knocking him off that spot into
second place in 2018.

Of course statistics can provide a different

On Sunday 21st November 2021 Portknockie

CBS held its open show in the Cullen Bowling
Judge and Tennis Club.
Over the past few years, the Gloster section has seen an
Dave Hobart increase in entries from 50 in 2015 to this year’s entry of
just under 150, that is without a show in 2020. Since our
last show in 2019 we have 3 new Gloster breeders and 1
returning after a few years out of the fancy. Two of the
new fanciers didn’t have time to get ready for showing
and the returning fancier showing a few birds from a first
breeding season. With a good breeding season in front of
them it all bodes well for another increase in 2022.

Portknockie CBS now has the largest show of Glosters

in Scotland for which we are really proud. This year our
judge was Dave Hobart who made the 600 [Six Hundred]

Venue
mile round trip from Carlisle and he brought Robbie
Wright with him who was making an even longer trip from
Middlesbrough, just for the famous Cullen Skink. Given
our geographical position, 60 miles east of Inverness on
the Moray Firth coast we really appreciate Dave for doing
the honors and Robbie for his continued support and the
donation of a fine pair of Glosters, which went for £100 by
silent action.
Cullen Bowling & Tennis Club Best Gloster went to Sandy Hay with a nice Unflighted Buff
Corona Hen and Sandy also had Best Opposite head with a
Flighted TPD Consort Hen.

Best Cinnamon went to Donnie Bain from Wick with a

Unflighted Consort cock making the long journey worth-
while. Best Yellow went to Michael Anderson from Duff-
town with an Unflighted Consort Cock. Best White went to
Jason Miller from Bonnyrigg near Edinburgh.

The only disappointing part of the show was the absence

of Novice and Junior exhibitors, but I think most shows
struggle in this area, I’m afraid we can’t compete with the
computer games so we will just have to live with it.

“Cullen skink is a thick Scottish soup made of smoked

Golden D-Cup
The second edition of the Golden D-Cup was held on
the 4th December at the Mosta Communal Hall which is
situated in the heart of Malta.

This was the second edition which reached a total 243 exhibits,
all champion, which is why the show was labelled “The Show of
Champions”. The Golden D-Cup was created and named by a small
group of friends who wanted to preserve the Maltese and British
connection and the way the Gloster Canary is exhibited.

The strong bond between the two countries, which has a history
of 25 years of exhibiting local birds in the British standard show
cage, was dented when the black D-Cup drinker was abolished
from the Maltese Islands, ironically on the 20th anniversay from
its inception. This move triggered the creation of the Gloden
D-Cup all Gloster Open Show which saw the standard drinker
coming back with a bang, this time even in Gold, Silver and
Bronze, three drinkers that are taken home by the winners and
runner-up.

The judge for this year’s show was Bruno Chetta, from France,
who did an excellent job and left an overall good impression on all
the Maltese exhibitors.
The Best Gloster in Show was won by Raymond Borg with a lovely
unflighted buff consort hen that was a deserved winner. Best
Opposite Head in Show was also won by Raymond with a beautiful
variegated buff corona hen that could have also won the show,
as she was equally superb. The Aggregate Cup was won by Mario
Zahra who scored a total 173 points, winning 9 classes and eleven
2nd & 3rd placings in all categories.

Other winners included: Third Best in Show,

Best Corona Hen, Best Consort Hen and Best
Consort Cock all won by Raymond Borg. Best
Corona Cock was won by Mario Zahra.

Best Buff - Raymond Borg; Best Three Parts

Dark - Mark Cilia who also won Best Grizzle;
Best Cinnamon - Mario Zahra; Best Yellow -
Raymond Borg and Best White was won by
Peter Falzon.

The organisers of the Golden D-Cup would like

to thank Bruno Chetta (Judge) for his super
job, all the exhibitors for believing in the show
concept and all the sponsors for supporting an
event that is fast becoming “one to list on your
calendar”.

Somethings you can’t Predict

West Midland Gloster Association and their
new partners Midland Gloster Fancy Canary
Association were looking forward to hosting an
exceptional entry to their first combined event
on the 7th November 2021...
Entries piled in from the start of October taking the number
to 700 before “Harri” the show secretary had to close entries
to ensure a safe hall capacity. This obviously left many notable
exhibitors seemingly unable to participate at WMGA21.

Then disaster struck, and to quote a TV sitcom character of

the 90’s Victor Meldrew, a retiree whose insufferable attitude only attracts bad luck, the phrase “I do not believe it”
could be heard resounding across the Midlands.

Why? Because a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 hit the country and cases were recorded close to
the Bromsgrove venue. The consequences being that Defra / Apha confirmed that the show could not go ahead as
the venue was just within a containment zone. How unlucky can you get? WMGA formed in 2017 by now should be
holding its 5th Exhibition but is struggling to get number 3 off the ground. Exceptionally heavy snow in year one, then
Covid lockdown and now avian flu have restricted holding the event on 3 occasions, BUT not to be defeated WMGA
will pick itself up and look positively toward 2022.

Judges, Neil Burton, Paul Reay, Dave Hobart are returning to try again to judge some of the best exhibited Glosters
in the country. Date is fixed 6th November 2022 Venue available, Hotels booked, Trophies, Certificates, Rosettes in
place. So, with heart felt apologies going out to all those 2021exhibitors, we are sorry that yet again the situation was
out of our control, and we had to pull the event at the last minute. We sincerely hope that you have already marked
the date in your 2022 show calendar as a must attend event. We want to emulate 2021 numbers and if possible,
break the 700 ceiling.

Forever the optimists’ schedules and entry forms are already available on the West Midland web site https://
westmidgloster.wixsite.com/wmga/current-future-events. Annual trophies available for open competition are
probably the finest and certainly the most historic on the show circuit, dating back to the 1940’s. Something to get
your name(s) associated with.

Memories of the First Netherlands
All Gloster Show (ENGS)
“As the last couple of years have been so difficult with so many shows
being cancelled, I found myself remembering the great times I have had
travelling to Holland to judge the First Netherlands all Gloster Club Show”
The show was the brainchild of Bert Munneke and Ben Mense in 1990.
At the time there were no All Gloster shows in the Netherlands,
so Bert and Ben were taking a risk within the fancy in Holland,
especially by adopting the UK classification and the comparison
method of judging. Bert and Ben were good friends with
Dave Norris so asked Dave to judge the show together with a
judge of his choice. It was a privilege that Dave chose me to
accompany him and the start of many friendships.
I have many fond memories and experiences of travelling and
judging the show and seeing the sights of the Netherlands and
making many new friends. I cannot remember exactly how
many occasions I have judged the show, but it must be over 15
times by now.

I remember the first show very well; Dave Norris and I got the
overnight sleeper ferry from Sheerness and were picked up early in the morning by Bert Munneke at Vlissingen. I was
very tired having not slept all night due to Dave’s snoring.
We were asked to bring birds over for sale at the show, so the first job was to stop for breakfast and give the birds a
drink. Bert had organised a couple visits to other fanciers during our free day on the Friday, we also had to pick up
the trophies and rosettes. We stayed at Bert’s house with the bird room being out of bounds until after the show.
That first show was my first experience judging outside of the UK, and the first with all the
exhibitors watching, at the time was not done in the UK and I thought it was a great idea.
I believe there was an entry of around 330 birds, all in the old heavy budgie style cages, with sand in the bottom.
I remember John Vandenstraten winning best in show with a
Corona hen. As always, we were treated to a superb meal in
the evenings, Dave Norris spoiling himself when he knew he
shouldn’t, his words were “Oh go on then” when asked if he
wanted dessert. Dave’s phrase is still remembered now and is
always repeated whenever Bert and I meet up. We had to be up
early on Sunday for the return home, but not nearly enough, as it
was a fast car journey with Bert jumping a few red lights to get to
Vlissingen just in time to catch the boat.
It has always been a pleasure to judge at the show; I have made
many good friends over the years and judged alongside many
fanciers from the UK and Belgium. The quality of the birds has
improved greatly from the first show 30 years ago; the standard and quality in depth is now on a par if not better
than in the UK. The show continues to go from strength to strength, which is a credit to the show organisers in
particular Bert and Ben who are still at the helm. The show also benefits from the commitment of all the members
and fanciers throughout Holland and Belgium.

Let us all hope that we can get back to normal soon and all shows can go ahead without threat of cancellation and
restrictions.

New Annual Show !
On Sunday 23rd January 2022 a meeting was held in the
McBoyle Hall Portknockie to see if there was enough
support to start an All Gloster show in the N E of Scotland.
The meeting didn’t last long as it was unanimously agreed
to give it a go. A show date was agreed to be Sunday 23

fitted kitchen catering will be of the highest standard with
ample space in the attached snug for dining. The show hall
is owned by Portknockie Amenities so 2 days hall hire is
only £60. There is ample parking available. The show hall is
convenient for our staging which is stored a mere 100mtrs
away.
Accomodation
Accommodation is well served by the Cullen Bay Hotel
2 miles away or 20 minutes walk across the golf course
if so inclined. The show hall can be seen from the hotel
conservatory.

Things to do
While judging is in progress fanciers can stroll along the
beach or walk along the cliff tops and if you are lucky you
might see the Moray Firth dolphins.

Judge Appointment
The judge appointed for our inaugural show is Sam Guy from
Mansfield. We really appreciate Sam making the journey. For
fanciers making the journey for the first time, please, do not
set your sat nav until you reach the Aberdeen area. If setting
your sat nav earlier, you will get the scenic route over the
mountains. You have been warned.

Donation
A very generous donation of £100 has been donated by
Donnie Bain for Best Gloster at the inaugural show of the
North of Scotland Gloster Club. The club really appreciates
Donnie’s generosity.

When the old website went the way of all things past, as reported the committee took the no- brainer, but brave,
decision to instruct a professional rebuild. So has that decision proved successful or not? Has money been well
spent or not? Statistical evidence from the sites’ analytics seem to answer both questions in the positive. One of the
prime interesting points is that the greater majority of accessing of the site has been by mobile devices. Another is
the country reach the new site is achieving. This seems to identify that the Association needs to take notice of the
fact that future media communication must, whilst not dismissing traditional methods, start to focus on best use of

A site’s bounce rate is important because it tells you how well people are or more importantly, aren’t engaging with
a webpage’s content or user experience. A high bounce rate means that a visitor’s overall session duration is short;
they visit a page on your site and leave. A low bounce rate means that visitors are spending time on a page and
clicking on available links.
So, what is a good bounce rate? A bounce rate of 56% to 70% is on the high side, although there could be a good
reason for this, and 41% to 55% would be considered an average bounce rate. An optimal bounce rate would be in
the 26% to 40% range.
The key to continued success is for members and affiliates to discard negativity and positively engage with their
association. Produce and provide interesting editorial e.g. club news, show reports & pictures, new initiatives to
