There cannot be a better choice of trek for people keen on getting under the skin of Everest, as the
excitement builds from Kathmandu itself, where you board the aircraft that whisks you away to the
airstrip at Lukla, nestled in an alpine world of pure air and colourful Buddhist prayer flags.
Our route follows the furious Dudh Koshi river to Namche Bazaar, a village in the Khumbu region
made famous by the hardy Sherpa community. From there we head higher, into a valley and all the way
to the base camp from where expeditions to the 8,000-meter peak are planned. The going is easy leaving
us with enough time to explore the culture at picturesque Sherpa hamlets, among which is Thyangboche,
a jaw-dropping cluster of beautiful houses with the picturesque monastery above it.
The trek's high points include awe-inspiring views of Everest from Kala Pathar's summit, and Everest
Base camp, where we go memorably close to the spectacular “Khumbu Icefall”, which leads to South
Col - the route taken on the first ascent of the legendary "third pole". If the walk and the landscapes are
a double joy, the icing on top is the standard of lodges on the trail.
Tata Steel Adventure Foundation (TSAF) was founded by the legendary mountaineer, Ms. Bachendri
Pal (Padma Bhushan, Padma Shree & Arjuna Awardee), the first Indian woman to climb Mt. Everest
on May 23, 1984. TSAF is an outdoor leadership institute which through its wide range of activities
aims at developing future leaders by increasing their mental and physical endurance limits. True to its
philosophy of experiential learning, TSAF believes that there is no classroom better than nature and no
teacher better than one’s own will power.
TSAF has 7 mountaineers who have summitted Mt. Everest. One of them might accompany you
and share their journey from EBC to top of Mt. Everest.
