Dear Editor,

I am writing in regard to the article published in the latest issue of the WSJ

Magazine, the topic is very interesting and also very controversial. NATO is the

most powerfull political and military alliance in human history who has the

biggest role in the ensurance of peace and security in the North Atlantic space,

the 30 members cooperate in matters of defence and territory integrity. In my

opinion, NATO should be present in that area, because the problems of Middle

East could become easily the problems of the entire world.

The essential purpose of NATO is to defend freedom and the security of its

members, through political and military means. Politically, NATO promotes

democratic values and encourages consultation and cooperation on defense and

security issues with a view to promotion trust and, in the long term, conflict

prevention. From a military point of view, NATO favors the peaceful settlement

of disputes. In case of the diplomatic effort fails, the Alliance has the necessary

military capacity of crisis management operations Since 1949, NATO provided

stability and guarantee the freedom of its members, but, in some cases the

involvement in other region, not only the Middle East (Serbia 90's), was

mandatory for the international security.

 I consider that the NATO’s operations should expand outside his

traditional mandate. Firstly, in this dinamic security climate is very hard to

preconize the changes in a society from Middle East without being present

permanently, the numbers of people who are atracted to terrorist organization is

in a continous increase and the threats to the democratic world are enourmus.

Secondly, the presence of NATO military forces in the Middle East will

discourage totalitarian regimes that sponsor terrorism and facilitate the freedom

of expression of peoples oppressed by religious ideologies by promoting liberal

values.

If NATO hadn’t existed, I believe that the world we know would look

completely different, international organizations such as the UN or the EU

would not face the threats from the post-war period and until now.

In conclusion, I will support my opinion in which I believe that NATO

should be involved in regions other than the North Atlantic space because it is

the only organization that can create and support balance in unstable regions

such as the Middle East.
