This document (HD 629.1 S3:2019) has been prepared by CLC/TC 20, "Electric cables".
This Harmonization Document has been written as part of a series of standards to satisfy the Public
Procurement Directive, and is complementary to HD 620, which covers extruded insulation power
cables from 3,6/6(7,2) kV to 20,8/36(42) kV, inclusive.
This standard defines the requirements, which may be called up for joints, stop ends, separable
connectors, indoor and outdoor terminations when used with extruded insulation power cables
covered by HD 620. The equivalent requirements for paper-insulated power cables are given in
HD 629.2.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. CENELEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
__________
1 Scope
1.1 General
This document specifies performance requirements for type tests for cable accessories for use on
extruded insulation power cables as specified in HD 620 or other relevant cable standards.
Once type test for an accessory is successfully completed, it is not necessary to repeat the test,
unless changes are made in the materials, design or manufacturing process, which might affect the
performance characteristics.
Possible extra thermo-mechanical forces due to high current loads from renewable sources of power
generation are not covered by these tests (under consideration).
Accessories for special applications such as submarine cables, ship cables or hazardous situations
(explosive environments, fire resistant cables or seismic conditions) are not included.
U 0 is the rated power-frequency voltage between conductor and earth or metallic screen, for which
the cable accessory is designed;
U is the rated power-frequency voltage between conductors for which the cable accessory is
designed;
U m is the maximum value of the 'highest system voltage' for which the cable accessory is designed.
1.4 Current
The continuous current rating of a termination or joint for extruded insulation power cables is in
accordance with the appropriate cable specified in HD 620 or other relevant cable standards and is
suitable for operation at the rated current and under short circuit fault conditions at the temperatures
stated therein.
The current rating of a separable connector is governed by the current rating of the mating bushing
(see EN 50180 and EN 50181).

4 Components
4.1 Connectors
Connectors used within the accessory shall comply with EN 61238-1 class A, or with another relevant
standard or specification when agreed between manufacturer/supplier. All connectors shall be
identified in accordance with Annex B.
Where an accessory is to be installed with a different connector than that used for qualification, its
compatibility and performance shall be verified.
Compliance is demonstrated with the connector used in the tests. For extension of compliance to
other connectors refer to 6.6.
4.2 Materials
It is not a prerequisite for compliance with this testing standard that any component material (resin,
heat-shrink tubing etc.) should be subject to any form of individual type testing or fingerprinting.
Where required, monitoring of the ongoing suitability of component material supplies should be done
by fingerprinting using the EN 50655.
If type testing of resins, pressure sensitive adhesive tapes and flexible insulating sleevings for
electrical purposes is required, reference should be made to the relevant standards produced by
IEC/TC 15, which have been adopted by CENELEC, as listed for information in the bibliography.
The term “material characterization” is sometimes used in conjunction with both type testing and
fingerprinting of component materials, but it is undefined, and its use should therefore be avoided.
5 Test assemblies
5.1 Identification
Cables
The cables used for testing should comply with HD 620 or other relevant cable standards and shall
be identified as in Annex A.
Connectors
Connectors used within the accessories shall be identified as in Annex B.
Accessories
The accessory that is installed shall be within its shelf life.
Compliance for one type of accessory, for the range of cable cross-sections from 95 mm² to 300 mm²,
shall be obtained by successfully completing all the appropriate tests of Table 10 to Table 13 of this
standard on any one of the cable cross-sections specified above.

The accessory test size of range taking accessory should have at least one of the sizes described in 5.2.2
within its range, but the min & max does not need to be one of these values. For example, the range could be
95 mm² to 300 mm².
Separable connectors
For separable connectors, the conductor cross-section of the test cable shall be as defined in Table 3.
5.3 Assembly
Accessories shall be assembled in accordance with the manufacturer/supplier's instructions, using
the components and materials supplied or specified. A joint designed for crossed cores shall be
assembled with the cores crossed.
5.4 Terminations
Non range taking terminations shall be tested using the arrangements detailed in Figure 1.
Range taking terminations shall be tested using the arrangements detailed in Figure 2.
In all cases the number of samples shall be as defined in the appropriate figure.
For practical reasons, it is permissible to carry out the tests with the terminations enclosed in a test
terminal box fabricated from rigid metallic mesh or from insulating material lined with metal foil. The
box shall allow humidity ingress.
The test terminal box shall be of the same shape and dimensions (e.g. creepage lengths and
clearances) as the specified terminal box and be provided with conductor terminals and bushings of
the type used in service. The box selected for testing should represent the minimum clearance
applicable for the design to operate successfully.
When only one of the termination samples is required to be tested in the terminal box, the remote end
of the test cable may be terminated by any suitable means.
Where a water height of 1 m is deemed insufficient, upon agreement with the manufacturer/supplier,
accessories shall be tested using an increased water height of 20 m (equivalent to 200 kPa relative).
Testing at one water height demonstrates compliance for that water height only.
Testing at both 1 m and 20 m water heights demonstrates compliance at those water heights and at
all intermediate water heights.
NOTE 2 The equivalent water height can be achieved using a pressurized water tank.
Where a branch-joint is being tested, only the main cable shall carry heating current.
Unscreened separable connectors shall be tested at the minimum phase-to-phase and phase-to-earth
clearances recommended by the manufacturer/supplier.
The current value shall be sufficient to achieve the specified temperature of the cable conductor (see
9.1 of EN 61442:2005).

Cross-sections listed are selected to reach the cable short circuit temperature θ sc .
d) Sequence D2/E2 can be done on cable cross section from D1/E1.
These figures represent examples of test arrangements. Other arrangements and combinations of
different types of accessories in one loop are permitted.
6 Extent of compliance
6.1 General
Compliance shall extend the use of an accessory on cables of the same U 0 as the test cable but with
equal or greater nominal insulation thickness. The converse shall not apply.
Compliance of an accessory tested for a specified U 0 shall extend to operation of the accessory at a
lower U 0 provided that the radial electrical stress at the insulation screen of the cable of lower U 0 is
not greater than that of the test cable. Compliance of separable connectors used at a lower U 0 is
subject to an additional requirement for screen fault initiation testing (see 6.5).
Compliance is independent of the cable conductor material; tests may be carried out with either
aluminium or copper conductors.
Compliance shall extend to all dynamic short circuit classes lower than that tested.
Extension of compliance for the same design of accessory to smaller or larger cable cross-sections
shall be obtained by satisfactory completion of relevant tests, according to Table 4.
NOTE "Same design" includes: same architecture, same manufacturing process, same conception, same materials, same
sealings, compatible electrical stress (maximum electrical stress less or equal to the maximum electric stress at the tested
cable accessory interface), compatible interfaces (interfaces of same or longer lengths between conductive parts). Other
differences observed between accessories are subject to an agreement between manufacturer/supplier and purchaser.

Test Sequences refer to Tables 10, 11, 12 & 13
Extension of compliance for the same design of accessory to smaller or larger cable cross-sections
shall be obtained by satisfactory completion of relevant tests, according to Table 5.
NOTE Same design includes: same architecture, same manufacturing process, same conception, same materials, same
sealings, compatible electrical stress (maximum electrical stress less or equal to the maximum electric stress at the tested
cable accessory interface), compatible interfaces (interfaces of same or longer lengths between conductive parts). Other
differences observed between accessories are subject to an agreement between manufacturer/supplier and purchaser.
Intermediate size No test required as included within the range of smallest to largest
a)
Test Sequences refer to Tables 10, 11, 12 & 13
6.4 Terminations
Compliance for a particular design of termination in a specified terminal box shall be obtained by the
satisfactory completion of the test sequence in Table 10. If compliance has already been obtained for
a termination design separate from the terminal box, it is necessary to carry out the test sequence
with only one of the terminations in a terminal box.
Satisfactory completion of the appropriate tests of Table 10 for a termination for one design of
terminal box may allow the compliance to be extended to that termination in another terminal box
design by comparison of the detail drawings of the boxes. If there are differences in the design and/or
dimensions, the impulse voltage test at ambient temperature shall be repeated, by agreement
between the manufacturer/supplier and the customer.
In addition, for screened separable connectors, the screen fault current initiation test shall be done
at the lowest U 0 for which compliance is required.
Extension of the range of compliance for the same type of separable connector to smaller cable
conductor cross-sections shall be obtained by successfully completing the additional test sequence
in Table 17, on the appropriate smaller cross-section.
Extension of the range of compliance for the same type of separable connector to larger cable
conductor cross-sections shall be obtained by successfully completing the additional test sequence
in Table 18, on the appropriate larger cross-section.
6.6 Connectors
The accessory qualification can be extended to an alternative connector, provided that the following
minimum requirements are satisfied (stop ends are excluded):
1. An accessory with an alternative connector shall be positively tested according to the test
sequence of Table 16 on the largest conductor size possible.
2. The alternative connector shall be qualified according to EN 61238-1, and shall be of the same
class as the qualified one and of the same cable conductor type.
3a. For joints and terminations, the alternative connector shall have the same technology (for
example: mechanical, compression) and a similar design criteria as the qualified one (see
Table 6).
3b. For separable connectors, different technologies and similar design criteria can be applied for
the barrel only (see Table 7). The palm of these lugs is usually adapted to a specific design of
separable connector.
4. If the alternative connector does not satisfy all of the requirements in points 2 and 3 above,
then relevant type tests according to Tables 10 to 15 shall be performed.
Table 6 — Compliance requirements of connectors for joints and terminations
Accessories tested on cables with one type of non-metallic insulation screen demonstrate compliance
when used with another type of non-metallic insulation screen after successful completion of tests in
Table 10 to Table 15, test sequences A1, B1, C1, D1 and E1.
7 Test sequences
7.1 General
The test sequences for the various types of accessory are detailed in Table 10 to Table 15, with
additional tests in Table 16 to Table 18. The test voltages are summarized in Table 19.
Class 0 Three core accessories designed for initial peak current below 63 kA and single core
accessories designed for initial peak current below 80 kA.
No test required.
Class 1 Three core accessories designed for initial peak currents above 63 kA up to and
including 80 kA.
The test current shall be 80 kA initial peak.
Class 2 Three core and single core accessories designed for initial peak currents above 80 kA

Class 3 Three core and single core accessories designed for initial peak currents above 100 kA
up to and including 125 kA.
The test current shall be 125 kA initial peak.
The dynamic short-circuit test may be combined with the first thermal short-circuit tests (on the
conductor) at ambient temperature.
8 Test results
8.1 General
All test samples shall meet the requirements of the relevant test sequence.
The visual examination at the end of a test sequence is mandatory, but the results are for information
only. They shall be recorded in the test report.
- test arrangement
- test sequence table
- identification of accessory (5.1.3)
- identification of cable (Annex A)
- identification of connector (Annex B)
- examination check list (Annex C, C.2)
- minimum clearance to any test box, if applicable
The test reports shall be signed by a representative of the body carrying out the tests. This may be
the manufacturer/supplier or a recognized test laboratory.
8.3 Failures
General
If any of the samples does not meet the requirements, it shall be dismantled and inspected to establish
the cause of failure. There is no requirement for details of such failures to be recorded in a test report.
If the failure is as detailed in 8.3.2, 8.3.3 or 8.3.4 the test sequence shall be repeated as stated.
The complete test sequence shall be repeated on a new sample or possibly on a new set of samples.
Bushing failure
If a bushing failure occurs, the test shall be declared void without discrediting the accessory.
Tests may be repeated on a new sample or possibly on a new set of samples, starting from the
beginning of the test sequence.
Cable failure
If a cable fails beyond any part of the accessory, the test shall be declared void without discrediting
the accessory.
Tests may be repeated using new accessories, starting from the beginning of the test sequence or,
alternatively, by repairing the cable and continuing the test sequence from the point of break.
9 Visual examination
The purpose of the examination is to document the status of the accessory, connector and cable after
the tests.
All the accessories that have been submitted to a test sequence shall be examined according to
Annex C, and the information shall be documented in the report as required by the Annex C.
The manufacturer/supplier shall be actively involved in the examination and its findings, unless he
agrees otherwise.
Prior to the examination of the accessory, a drawing shall be supplied by the manufacturer/supplier
identifying seals and the parts of the accessory from which moisture shall be excluded to ensure
reliable operation in service.
12 Humidity (e)
13 x 300 h duration at 1,25 U 0 (f )
(a) In order to reduce the number of test loops, test sequence A1 can be combined with test sequence A2 (perform test 1 to 5
then test 6 to 11 and test 13). For single core range taking terminations extra test samples of the maximum size will be
required in order to create 3 loops for test sequence A2.
(b) This test is only required for accessories that are equipped with a connection to, or adaptor for, the
metallic screen of the cable.
(c) This test can be combined with the thermal short circuit on the conductor.
(d) Applies to 3-core cables only. For the value of the current I d , see 7.2.
Due consideration shall be given to ensure that the installation arrangement is representative for the
application.
(e) Not required for terminations with porcelain insulators.
(f) No breakdown nor flashover, no more than 3 trips, no substantial damage. It is considered that a
substantial damage has occurred when it is evident that the performance of the accessory has been
severely reduced by:
(i) loss of dielectric quality due to tracking;
and/or (ii) erosion to a depth of 2 mm or 50 %, whichever is the smaller, of the wall thickness of
the insulating material as applied;
and/or (iii) splitting of the material;
and/or (iv) puncture of the material.
NOTE Refer to Clause 8 of EN 61442:2005 for details of the calibration of conductor heating current required to have
been carried out before the commencement of these tests.
(a) In order to reduce the number of test loops, test sequence A1 can be combined with test sequence A2
(perform test 1 to 7 then test 8 to 13 and test 15). For single core range taking terminations extra test
samples of the maximum size will be required in order to create 3 loops for test sequence A2.
(b) This test is only required for accessories that are equipped with a connection to, or adaptor for, the metallic
screen of the cable.
(c) This test can be combined with the thermal short circuit on the conductor.
(d) Applies to 3-core cable only. For the value of the current I d , see 7.2.
Due consideration shall be given to ensure that the installation arrangement is representative for the
application.
(e) Not required for terminations with porcelain insulators.
(f) The specific creepage distance of tested accessory shall be recorded (definition given in IEC/TS 60815-1).
(g) No breakdown nor flashover, no more than 3 trips, no substantial damage. It is considered that a substantial
damage has occurred when it is evident that the performance of the accessory has been severely reduced by:
(i) loss of dielectric quality due to tracking;
and/or (ii) erosion to a depth of 2 mm or 50 %, whichever is the smaller, of the wall thickness of the
insulating material as applied;
and/or (iii) splitting of the material;
and/or (iv) puncture of the material
NOTE Refer to Clause 8 of EN 61442:2005 for details of the calibration of conductor heating current required to have
been carried out before the commencement of these tests.

Visual examination
C.1 Method
Accessories shall be dismantled as far as is practicable to reveal the principal components. Where
possible this should be done layer by layer. This may be facilitated by using the manufacturer/supplier
instructions to identify each step.
Particular attention should be paid to the condition of primary seals and to their effectiveness in
preventing the ingress of moisture.
The examination procedure should include the identification of any cracks, splits, corrosion, leakage
of insulation material, evidence of over-heating or thermo-mechanical effects.
At least all identified items marked ”Yes” in the examination sheet shall be described in the report
and illustrated with photographs.
NOTE It is helpful to make photographs at all stages of the examination.
Accessory No Yes
Cable No Yes
Indication of possible mechanical degradation:
———————
1) In the case of doubt, a test can be performed with a colour indicator (for example powdered anhydrous copper sulphate),
or blotting paper can be used as a detector.
2) Any leakage of material involved in the insulation of the accessory shall be reported.
