About the shot: Nothing is more repetitive than a scene


that people have seen thousands of times in a similar
form. The challenge here is to stand out from the crowd
by pursuing new visual strategies, and this is especially
true when photographing famous architecture. This isn’t
easy, as the surroundings can limit the photographer
and familiar images are burned into our memory, so it’s
all about getting creative and rejecting old impressions.
Photographer Antonio Bernardino Coelho accepted
the challenge, capturing the architecture of the Casa
da Musica in Porto with a fresh vision. “My goal was to
create a different view of the building, which was difficult
as the architecture is internationally acclaimed. It was
designed by Dutch architect, Rem Koolhaas, as part of
the European Capital of Culture,” Antonio explains.
When framing the building in its surrounding area,
Antonio chose to shoot from a linear perspective with
a vanishing point. But this strategy came with some
difficulties. “One of the main challenges was the distance
between where I took the image and the architecture
itself,” he says. “If I had used a wide-angle lens, the
effect it created would have flattened the building. So
I captured 13 photos in total and created a panorama.”
To follow his creative vision, Antonio adjusted a few
specific things in post-processing. “I wanted to highlight
the building, especially the right window with panels of
blue tiles – a characteristic of Portugal. I minimised the
impact of its surroundings, both on the right and on the
ground, by adding a blur effect to direct the viewer’s
focus to the details of the architecture,” Antonio says.

disappointing to some, the camera had
many strong features and deserves an
update. There is speculation as to whether
this will take the form of an EOS R Mark II or
an EOS R8, but we are likely to see a revised
body design (goodbye MFn Bar) dual card
slots and uncropped 4K video. An EOS R5
Mark II is not unlikely either, perhaps with
a 60MP sensor.
All eyes are on the elusive R1 of course,
though even if it is announced, we’d be
surprised if it was available in 2023. We’ll

almost certainly see some development of


the APS-C line though.

Nikon Nikon is finally taking some ground back from its competitors but will this continue?
If the Canon EOS R3 was the competitive
answer to the Nikon Z9, then at some point
it’s reasonable to assume Nikon will target
a camera to rival the EOS R1, whenever that
model does materialise. This might not be
the Z8 though, which is rumoured for a 2023
release and is supposedly the mirrorless
answer to the beloved D850, the success of
which Nikon is clearly keen to repeat.
Such a model could feature a higher
resolution sensor than the Z9, or the same
sensor at a lower price point. The Z6 and Z7
III cameras are also suggested in a ‘leaked’
roadmap, the authenticity of which is unknown.

iterative updates rather than revolutionary ones.

Sony You can’t accuse Sony of not providing choice – and its range is only set to grow further
Sony is a major force in photography today and the company
is keen not to lose any momentum. While it can be tricky to
work out its product strategy, the overlap in camera specs
leaves few gaps in the Sony mirrorless lineup, which will
probably be a continued trend in 2023. Sony thrives on having
a camera for everyone and so we may see updates at both
pro and enthusiast levels.
An A9 III is rumoured to have 24MP, up to 30fps burst
shooting and AI autofocus tracking. Having been delayed by
over a year already, if it’s going to happen surely it will in Q1/2
of 2023, chip shortage allowing. We may also see a successor
to the popular A6400, with BIONZ XR and AI processing

image may be severely overexposed or underexposed. That means the

handheld starscapes on the fly.
That stability is also supremely useful for
video, producing gimbal-like smoothness if
you know what you’re doing with the camera.

fireworks or lightning shots you’ll ever take – resides on
the ‘B’ mode dial setting for easy access.
These make the camera feel like it punches above
its weight for value, offering next-generation tools in a
budget-friendly package. It’s good to see OM System
setting high goals and leading the pack in AI features,
which will soon become commonplace.
