X GAMES
The 2012 Winter X Games, which ran from Jan.
26 - 29 in Aspen, turned out to be one of the most
exciting ones yet.
Here are some of the most notable moments and
stories from this year:

S a r a h B u r k e Tr i b u t e
The games started with a somber note, as popular
Queen of Snow

freeskier Sarah Burke tragically died on Jan. 19 from

injuries sustained while training. The 29-year-old Ca-
nadian had taken the Gold in last year’s SuperPipe,
and would have been going for a repeat. The open-
ing night of the Games included a candlelight vigil
at the top of the SuperPipe in memory of Burke, and
throughout the week her fellow athletes paid heir re-
spects anyway they could.

“One if not the best winter
Xgames on record!”
Tr i p l e C o r k M a d n e s s
Friday, Jan. 27 proved to be a historic day in the
Big Air. A triple cork had never been success-
fully landed in the Winter X Games in this event,
but both Mark McMorris and Torstein Horgmo
pulled one off. These amazing feats helped earn
McMorris the gold and Horgmo the silver. The
18-year-old McMorris would also take first place
in the Slopestyle the very next day—make sure
to remember his name.

Clark Does It Again

SuperPipe virtuoso Kelly Clark once again
turned in a dominating performance—complete
with a frontside 1080—which gave her a fourth
gold and ninth medal in the event. Explaining her
consistent excellence, Clark said, “I approach
every contest, every run, every trick in that mo-
ment, one run at a time.”

Dope overload!
Snowmobiling Front Flip
In another Winter X first, Heath Frisby nailed a
front flip in the Snowmobiling Best Trick. He de-
servedly won the event, which gives him a ca-
reer total of seven medals.

No Stopping Shaun White

While many new stars were made this year,
Shaun White cemented his status as a snow-
boarding legend. Despite suffering an ankle
injury that caused him to miss the Slopestyle,
White was actually able to up his performance
in Sunday’s SuperPipe, and became the first
athlete to score a perfect 100 in the event. The
historic run included an unprecedented frontside
double cork 1260, along with two other 1260
tricks. White earned his fifth consecutive gold
in the event, which upped his career total to 17
medals.

BA D GIRAFFE CLOTHING
BAD GIRAFFE CLOTHING <<
Bad Giraffe!! I’m sure this is a commonly
used phrase by zoo keepers all over the
world; I’m actually pissing myself laughing
right now thinking of a zoo keeper giving
one giraffe into trouble for harassing an-
other. Most of you will never have heard
of the phrase never mind the name, how-
ever this is about to change! By the time
you’ve read this article from top to toe you
will know who Bad Giraffe are and you will
love Teen Spirit for introducing you to such
an excellent label!

Bad Giraffe was born on an average cold,

wet and windy British day, when the cogs
of Matt Mulholland’s creative mind sprang
into action and his dream of creating a
clothing company that offered unique,
wearable and affordable garments that
everyone would want to own started to
flourish. Things were slow at first as Matt
worked tirelessly on creating eye-catching
designs that would be worthy enough of
gracing his garments and eventually after
months of prepping, designing, sampling
and name changing, Bad Giraffe was born!
Bad Giraffe hitting the scene bigtime!

tm

m agazine
32 www.teenspiritvibe.com
Bad Giraffe’s clothing really does stay true to their mission statement and is evident through-
out their full collection. Not for the first time since I got into writing about independent cloth-
ing company’s, I found myself looking at Bad Giraffe’s range and thinking, I’ll have that one,
that one, that one, in fact just put them all in a box and send them to my house, let’s hope I
win the lottery. As you can see when you arrive at Bad Giraffe’s site, every tee
has got the giraffe situated somewhere on it, obviously, from the ‘Clean
Cut Flag’ tee which replaces the stars on the American flag with the Bad
Giraffe logo, to the ‘Be Genuine’ tee which features a less prominent
giraffe, it’s obvious the Matt wanted to include the animal in most, if
not all of his designs. My favourite tee of the collection has got to be
the ‘Walk Tall’ tee, I just love the concept behind it, with its genius type
reading ‘Bad Giraffe Presents, Walk Tall’ and its attention to detail,
and I would say this one is a staple in any t-shirt fans closet.

tm

www.teenspiritvibe.com
m agazine
tm

It’s not surprising to read on Bad Giraffe’s site that

they’ve shipped to over 15 different countries world-
wide and Matt still takes pride in the fact that he does
everything from the designs, the site and the market-
ing, as he should be. With a need to further their line
and make a difference in the music scene, Bad Giraffe
started their own ‘Bad Giraffe Family’ featuring some
brilliant musical talent in the form of, ‘As We Climb’,
‘The Hype Theory’, ‘Call off the Search’ and many
more!

The question now is what does 2012 hold for Bad Gi-
raffe? To be honest, I don’t have a damn clue, but what
I do know is that whatever they do release will be just
as awesome as the previous if not better! One things
for sure, it’ll include a giraffe whatever it may be!

You can check out the full range from Bad Giraffe

IN CUFFS
PARIS
PARIS IN CUFFS
Paris in Cuffs, I’m not sure what Paris they’re talking about, is it the country, you know
where they wear black and white striped tops and wear strings of onions round their necks
, or is it that other Paris, you know the one that was in that porno a couple of years back?
To be honest the answer is irrelevant, but what is relevant is that we’ve got one hell of an
indie label here.

Arriving on the scene in late 2011, Paris

in Cuffs look to encourage the people who
buy their clothing to take control of what
they wear, while at the same time tailoring
their designs to meet the wider audience
as a whole. Their first collection was final-
ly unleashed towards the end of 2011 and
featured a selection of logo tees, as well as
what can only be described as five sensa-
tional photographic print tees.

When I say photographic print tees, I quite

simply mean Paris in Cuffs create a sce-
nario, take a photo and then print it straight
on to a crisp white tee. I personally own two
Paris in Cuffs tees and can honestly say
that I love them both, from
the print which is so vibrant it
seems to jump off the front of
the tee, to the fit and style of
the tees. The ‘Irrelevant’ tee
is one of the ones that grac-
es my collection and I abso-
lutely love the angle Paris in
Cuffs took on this one, that’s
not to say I think that eve-
rything women say is irrel-
evant, well maybe some of it, OK most of it!

their latest release as they
look to cement their status
as a major player in the indie
fashion world. Their first drop
of the New Year features the
excellent ‘Hades’ tee which
converts the phrase ‘A dog is
a man’s best friend’ or in the
case a women’s best friend,
creating a breath-taking im-
age that doesn’t only picture
this phrase but in turn says
a thousand words. The drop
also included a bad boy sweat
named ‘Pugs in Paris’, or
should we say bad dog sweat,
ah whatever, it features the
Paris in Cuffs

logo with a cute little pugs

face in the background of the
words, creating the perfect
sweat for an animal lover.

When reflecting on what Paris in Cuffs have achieved in such a short space of time I’ve
came to a realisation and this is it! If Paris in Cuffs continues to churn out timeless prints
in this excellent fashion I’m sure they will become major player in the indie fashion world
and with more tees scheduled for release next month, 2012 is going to be a massive year
for this alternative brand, I’d bet my collection of skateboarding VHS’s on it, including my
original first copy of ‘Flip, Sorry’ !

‘Let’s go Thunder Wolves’, I know
what you’re thinking, this sounds
like a cheesy line from an Ameri-

agine those barely clothed cheer-
leaders chanting it on the touchline

tunately there are no half naked
cheerleaders in this article, but I’m
sure you’ll find enough gorgeous
girls to feed your appetite through-
out the rest of the magazine.

I’m here to bring you the coolest

up and coming independent cloth-
ing labels from around the globe
each month and that’s exactly
what I’m going to do, starting with
new brand on the block, Thunder
Apparel.
Merely four months ago, Thunder
Apparel began their foray into the
independent fashion world with
their first release, the awesome
‘Bear Face’ tee (Pictured Right)
which upon release was an abso-
lute bargain at only £8.00. A few
months on and a slight price in-
crease to cover costs this tee is still
excellent value at only £10.00. Ex-
cellent value is a recurring theme
that you’ll see evident throughout
all of Thunder Apparels tees, with
the most expensive tee at the
moment tipping the scale at only
£12.50, ensuring this is a brand
that won’t ruin your bank balance,
leaving you plenty of cash for the
other things in life, like pizza and
alcohol!

Some real dope designs!

what most new brands would look to achieve in a year and 2012 is sure to be a mas-

The Most Controversial Games Of All Time

Words by Stephen Leigh

More so than any other form of media, video games have a particularly difficult
position when it comes to controversy. While violent films or TV shows merely
engage viewers passively, games differ in that they give direct control over the
on-screen action.

What many fail to understand is that the majority of gamers have the ability to
differentiate reality from fantasy. It’s for this reason that you don’t see the plumb-
ing industry swamped with applications from gamers who were attracted to the
profession by promises of gold coins and a hot princess named Peach.

Doom
While Doom will forever be known as
the game which popularized the first
person shooter, it was just as ground-
breaking for its gore. For many it
remains one of the earliest instances of
being both impressed and sickened by
such a high level of violence in a video
game. I must have been about 8 years
old when I first saw Doom in action –
the hellish world and its bloody and

that it was canned by scared publishers EA at the
last minute. A four player fighting game, Thrill Kill
was set in the depths of hell and focused on a
series of depraved characters with an emphasis
on graphic and sexualized violence. Characters
include a cattle prod wielding dominatrix named
Belladonna and Cleetus – a tapeworm infected
redneck.

BMX XXX
After successfully managing to replicate
the fun of the Tony Hawks Pro Skater
series with two enjoyable Dave Mirra
BMX titles, publisher Acclaim decided
to go in a slightly different direction with
the third entry of the series – presum-
ably coming to the conclusion that there
was a severe lack of tits.

GTA: San Andreas
Grand Theft Auto remains the number
one video game series synonymous
with controversy. So much so that it’s
almost impossible to pinpoint a single
entry. Every game in the series has

Boobies
Any lethal object that’s been placed on the ground
with malicious intent, namely the bouncing betty, the
IMF, and the friggin claymore. Don’t you love that

you have absolutely zero options for somehow avoid-
ing it and just wearing it like a champ? I don’t.
Death From Above
Two words. Stealth. Bomber. Somehow those only
get called in when I’m completely in the open and
have no chance of hiding. Every time.
Stealth Error
Anytime you try to get cocky when you sneak up on someone and either knife them in
the back or go for a headshot or something, and they somehow accidentally avoid it
and shoot you full of holes. That’s always a good moment to think about just quitting.
Hell Spawn
One thing that always makes me at least think about throwing my controller through
the nearest window is the Free For All “spawn and have a guy spawn in the exact
same spot half a second later so he can knife you in the back” death. It’s fun when your
guy number 2. It’s not fun when you’re number 1.
Bendy Bullets
The “see a guy shoot at you and run completely around a corner before somehow get-
ting shot, AROUND THE CORNER, by the guy you just ran away from” death. Figure
it out Call of Duty. Don’t give me false hope and then shatter it like that.
Superhuman Gunner
For me personally, the most irritating, infuriating death comes when you have one of
those guys who run around with akimbo FMG9’s. Somehow MW3 decided it would
be a good idea to throw any hint at reality way out the window and make those things
absurdly accurate, fast, and lethal. I’m sorry MW3, but when a guy is shooting 2 guns
at the same time, from the hip, at a full run, from 80 yards away, he’d be lucky to hit a
freakin cow, let alone square me up WITH THE FIRST THREE SHOTS!!! FPSRussia
and Chuck Norris are the only 2 humans capable of such feats. Period.

Savage take downs!

10 Most Iconic Images

in Horror Movie History
The horror genre has been one of the most popular with cinemagoers since projectors
first started rolling films. Over the past century, huge volumes of memorable and im-
pressive horror films have adorned our screens and as such horror villains and their
character victims and settings/locations have often become implanted within popular
culture, transcending the boundaries of the cinema screen to become familiar to those
who haven’t even seen the films in question.

The following are what we consider to be the 10 most iconic of these images… those
moments in horror cinema that have been ingrained in our soul and what
he have come to know as the 10 defining moments of horror.

10. HELLRAISER (1987)

Clive Barker’s Hellraiser series and lead character Pinhead are
undisputed icons of British horror. This grotesque and freakish
image of the devilish character actually scared me so much as a
child back in the 90s that the poster alone was enough to give me
nightmares for a week!

09. A NIGHTMARE ON ELM

STREET (1984)
Although Robert Englund’s horror villain, Freddy Krueger, eventually became
more of a comic character – even a parody of the typical evil pariah’s in such
horror films – at the very beginning he was an extremely unsettling and hor-
rific character. The hideous scaring from being burned alive makes Krueger
grotesquely horrific, his vile charred face something many viewers probably did
see in their nightmares

08. HALLOWEEN (1978)

One of horror cinemas most terrifying villains, this image of
Michael Myers still sends shivers down my spine. The
cold, expressionless face on the white mask makes
the super-villain look even more horrific and gro-
tesque, whilst the inability to see his eyes gives him
an eerie, inhuman quality.

07. SCARS OF DRACULA (1970)

Arguably in England, Christopher Lee’s image of Dracula is more notori-
ous and iconic than that of Bela Lugosi’s. Lee played the character in a
series of films for Britain’s Hammer Productions, whilst Lugosi only donned
the cape once for Universal’s classic adaptation.

tm

m agazine
96 www.teenspiritvibe.com
06. NOSFERATU (1922)
The terrifying image of Count Orlok in the 1922 classic silent horror
film, Nosferatu, needs to be nothing more than a shadow on a wall
Managing to induce sheer dread for audiences in only his shadow
form, the distinctively deformed silhouette of the vampiric Count is
the stuff of nightmares.

05. AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN

LONDON (1981)
If the original 1940s Wolf Man film is merely humorous
today, An American Werewolf in London is quite simply
grotesque and disgusting. The graphic transformation
sequence is truly the stuff of nightmares, but the
impressive special effects have made this im-
age one of the most iconic within the horror
genre.

04. THE EXORCIST (1973)

This hideous image is definitely one of the most easily identifi-
able in horror film history. The demonic eyes, scarred complex-
ion and rotting teeth immediately scream of possession and it’s
obvious that the image comes from the seminal film on the mat-
ter, The Exorcist. The image is incredibly grotesque and rather
chilling, but it’s the almost hypnotic quality of the eyes that makes
it so disturbing.

03. THE SHINING (1980)

I’d like to propose that without this sequence Stanley
Kubrick’s The Shining would not have become the legendary mas-
terpiece of horror that it is widely regarded as being today. Many
of you will disagree I’m sure, but the notorious moment where Jack
Nicholson hacks through the door is undeniably the most
iconic part of the film.

02. PSYCHO (1960)

Janet Leigh’s Psycho scream shot is literally everywhere! As horror
images go, its one of the most memorable and long lasting cinema has
ever produced. Instantly recognisable, fans of the genre – and cinema
as a whole, alike – know exactly who this is and what the
image is from.

01. FRANKENSTEIN (1931)

Known the world over and immediately identifiable for virtu-
ally anybody who’s ever heard of the word horror, Boris
Karloff’s classic portrait of the monster is as much ingrained
within popular culture as Janet Leigh’s scream. From the flat
head, through the bolts in the neck, right down to the bulky
footwear, Karloff created a character that remains well known
and easily identifiable 80 years later.
