EMS 56
FIRST ISSUED: SUPERSEDES:
March 20, 1947 LA GRANGE, ILLINOIS EMS 56-F
NAME: HOT ROLLED SHEET STEEL, COMMERCIAL QUALITY, PICKLED
REQUIREMENTS:
The sheet or strip supplier is responsible for meeting requirements 1 through 4. The
manufacturing organization is responsible for meeting requirements 5 and 6.
Steel sheet shall meet the requirements of the following standard ASTM A1011
Grade CS Type B, as modified herein. For thickness equal to and less than 3/16”
(4.8mm).
Other allowable material standards, substitutes for ASTM A1011 Grade CS Type
B. All other requirements of this specification must be followed.

EN 10111 DD11
GB/T 710 Grade 10
GOST 19281 295-09G2-13, 295-09G2S-13

ISO 3573 HR1
JIS G3131 Grade SPHC
KS D 3501 Grade SPHC
* For the purpose of utilizing the Caterpillar Steel program, CAT 1E0166
specification can be used. All other requirements of this specification must be
followed.
Allowable substitutes for sheet thickness #18 (0.0478”) (1.2mm) and smaller, are
materials listed in EMS 58, IND0103 (ASTM A1008 Grade CS Type B.)
2. Chemical Composition:
3. Bend Test:
A test specimen taken from the material shall be capable of being bent flat on itself,
in any direction, at room temperature, without cracking.
4. Surface Treatment:
Sheets are to have oxide and mill scale removed from the surface by
pickling in an acid bath. After pickling, all acid is to be removed from the steel
surface and one of the following methods of corrosion protection shall be
employed, as required in the purchase order.
b. The steel surfaces shall remain dry. The steel sheets shall be suitably
protected against corrosion during storage and shipment. Inside storage
is recommended.
The decision to specify and obtain steel in the pickled and oiled condition or the
pickled dry condition, shall be the responsibility of the manufacturing
organization (internal PRL/EMD or external supplier) which is producing the actual
parts and assemblies from the sheet steel.
a. This specification covers hot rolled sheet steel, suitable for ordinary purposes which has
been pickled to remove surface oxides. Painting, protection of tooling and sheet surfaces,
and applications where mill scale could be harmful to function, are reasons for using this
material. No physical tests other than bend testing are required. For brazing application,
see chemical test and engineering drawing requirements. Brazing of steels with a lower
Carbon value, and/or with a higher Manganese value beyond chemical compositions
listed in section 2, will become brittle and crack after brazing.
All sheet and strip will be known as sheet, for PLR/EMD purposes. Sheet and strip are
supplied up to and including 3/16” in thickness. Thicknesses greater than 3/16” are
classified as plate or bar and are covered by MS 4361 (IND0008). See Material
Specifications Index Number IND0000, for PRL/EMD treatment of gauge inch sizes and
metric conversions.
EMS 56 steel is a weldable, formable hot rolled sheet and strip material. The sheet is
available in 16 Ga through 7 Ga. The most common sheet thickness sizes are 7, 10, 11,
12, 14, and 16 Gauge. For steel thickness greater than 3/16” 0.1875” (4.8 mm), MS 4361
(IND0008) material specification shall be used. For thickness less than 16ga .0598”
(1.5mm), EMS 58 (IND0103) material specification shall be used).
c. Commercial quality sheet steel is not made or tested to specified mechanical properties
limits. Typical data for this material are shown below. Note that the range of possible
values for each of the various properties tends to be broad.
DRAFTING INFORMATION:
Where use of this material is specified, it shall be designated as:
In applications which require brazing, add this note to the material description:
The material Index number shall follow the specification material number when shown in the
“For Manufacturing Block” or when specified as a material note on the face of the drawing.
SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION:
Note: These specifications were developed without considering whether patents may or may
not be involved. In all cases, therefore, the supplier shall be required to assume
patent liability.
