Section 1 – Assessment Task Overview and Description

After class discussions on the history and culture of street dance:
Students are required to complete the following questions.

JESSE BOTTOMLEY 104469469

Questions are open book, students are encouraged to research and read a variety of sources of information
prior to compiling their answers.

1. Write a short paragraph explaining where and how street dance originated and developed
The origins of street dancing are mostly found in African culture, but due to New York City's cosmopolitan
population, a wide variety of musical influences can also be found in hip-hop music. One such inspiration
came from the 1960s-era Jamaican dub music subgenre of reggae. It was noted that dancers responded
particularly well to the longer, isolated beats of this form of music, which saw producers developing
instrumental versions of popular reggae tunes for clubs and sound systems. These tracks frequently featured
loud percussion and basslines.

1. Match the foundation street dance term to its meaning

Ticking.

2 Windmill The breaker rolls his torso continuously in a circular path on
the floor, across the upper chest/shoulders/back, while twirling
his legs in a V-shape through the air.
3 Jacking the dancer ripples their torso back and forth in an undulating
motion
4 Waacking Incorporates wild but controlled Arm movements up and
around the head, in time with a disco or funk beat, characterize

5 House dance Includes "Footwork", "Jacking", and "Lofting". House dance is

often improvised and emphasizes fast and complex foot-
oriented steps combined with fluid movements in the torso, as
well as floor work.

6 Cypher Refers to the act of freestyling in the centre of a circle of

dancers. Dancers enter the circle one by one, dancing to
express themselves and entertain each other.
7 Freeze Breaker suspends himself, or herself, off the ground using their
upper body strength
8 Toprock Refers to any consecutive steps performed from a vertical,
standing position. The foundation for breaking and usually
opens any dance set. Breakers then transition (“drop”) into
“down rock” and “power moves”.

2. Identify two styles of music used predominantly in street dance

Although Hip Hop, Funk, and Soul music are frequently played during breaking, breakdancers can also
perform to other types of music, including Rock, Jazz, and Reggae.

3. Describe the correct clothing and footwear to avoid injury to yourself in street dance class (hip hop
class)

Dance shoes with split soles are a great option for hip hop dancing. Your feet have more flexibility thanks
to them. These shoes have an insole with padding for shock absorption, arch support, and a spin-spot
on the ball of the foot for smooth turns.
Baggy or loose-fitting clothing, including pants, make it much easier to execute some dance techniques.

4. What are three positive benefits of improvisation for dancers in street dance?

Dancers can swiftly respond to the music and their environment thanks to it, which helps them
improve their musicality and timing.
Additionally, it promotes creativity and challenges dancers to explore novel movements and
combinations (increasing their movement vocabulary).
Dancers can become more confident and at ease with taking chances and making mistakes through
improvisation, which is crucial for both their personal development and artistic progress. Create a
warm up routine for street dance – include at least three exercises for each of the sections in the
table.
