COURSE OUTLINE
COURSE PURPOSE

To enable the learners to understand the components that constitutes the discipline and
describes the role and scope of history of education.

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. Explain the importance of studying the history of education


2. Discuss Africa Traditional education and its relevance to the modern theory and
practice of education.

3. Analyse the growth and development of education in Kenya;

4. Explore the history of education in the world;

5. Discuss the role of education in the national development;

6. Compare education practices in developing countries and Kenya’s education


system;

7. Explore the contributions of selected educational educators or thinkers;


8. Discuss the effects of both WWI and WWII on the development of education in
Kenya

9. Assess the post- independence educational development or policies in Kenya

10. Explain the cause and effect of Renaissance and reformation

11. Examine development of education during colonial period in Kenya.

COURSE CONTENT

The history of education; The importance of studying history of education; The


development of education throughout pre—post independence period; Development of
education in Africa prior to 1920- 1960; Development of education in Kenya prior to
1920- present; Comparative survey of education practices in other developing countries
and their implication for Kenya and education system; Education in the 17th and 18th
Centuries with historical study of ideas of selected important education thinkers;
Education in the 19th and 20th Centuries with historical study of the ideas of selected
important education thinkers; Effect of WWI and WWII on the development of education
in Kenya; Renaissance and Reformation in Europe and their role in the development of
education and their lasting legacy for education today; Role of education in national
development and civilization growth and development of education in relation to the
times, based on social, economic and political.
