V. Essay
Directions: Answer the following question briefly.

51-60. Is Jose Rizal a Reformist or a Revolutionary? Provide two (2) evidences for your answer. (10 points)

A Revolutionary. Rizal's acts and writings were revolutionary. He stated that violent revolution is
impossible, absurd, and disastrous, and that he has always opposed, fought, and made it plain that it is
impossible, ludicrous, and destructive. Reforms must "also come from above," he stressed, because reforms
"from below are violent and transient upheavals." José Rizal immediately rose to prominence as the foremost
propagandist. His novel Noli Me Tángere highlighted Manila society's corruption and fueled the
independence movement. Rizal, José By 1892, it was clear that Spain was hesitant to modernize its colonial
administration. Rizal was a revolutionary in the sense that when he realized that reform advocacy would
yield no results, he turned to more revolutionary (radical) ideals. When he was executed for treason against
Spain, he paid the ultimate price.
