Phase changes of water

Aim: To investigate the effect of temperature changes on the state of water

Equipment Method

- 1x Tripod 1. Set up the bunsen burner on top of a gauze and heat mat
- 1x Bunsen with the beaker on top of the tripod.
burner 2. Add 5 ice cubes into the beaker
- 1x Gauze mat 3. Measure the starting temperature of the beaker using a
- 1x Heat mat thermometer
- 1x Bunsen 4. Light bunsen burner and start stopwatch
burner 5. When the stopwatch reaches 1 minute, measure the
- 1x 250ml temperature of the beaker using a thermometer
beaker 6. Record the time, state of matter and temperature in a results
- 5x ice cubes table
- 1x Alcohol 7. Repeat steps 5-6 for every 1 minute interval until it has
thermometer reached 100°C

Risk Assessment:

Risk Consequence Precaution

Boiling water Burns on skin becoming To avoid hot water spillage, place the container
spillage infected on a flat surface away from the edge of the
surface

Broken glass Cuts to skin and Ask teacher to clean up broken glass
infection immediately

Bunsen burner Burns on skin becoming Wait for the bunsen burner to cool before
burns skin infected moving and avoid direct contact
