• Read the following passage and answer the questions given below it : [03]
It was the summer of 1936. The Olympic games were being held in Berlin. I wasn’t
worried about all this. I’d trained, sweated and disciplined myself for six years, with
the games in mind. While I was going over on the boat, all I could think about
was taking home one or two of those gold medals; I had my eye especially on
the long jump. A year before I’d set the world record of 26 feet ¼ inches. Every
one expected me to win that Olympic event hands down (without difficulty). I was
in for a surprise. When the time came for the long jump trials, I was startled
(surprised) to see a tall boy hitting the pit (jumping ) at almost 26 feet on his practice
leaps. He turned out to be a German named Luz Long. Every German was evidently
hoping that he would win the jump. I too was determined to go out there and really
prove myself.

they didn’t like any suit. Desperate they went to the owl’s house who was the most
prestigious dress maker of the forest. She designed for them a pair of striped, while
and black trousers. These were the most marvellous suits that a flamingo had ever
worn. Now they could go to the party. When the day came everybody was very
happy, but the snakes were very worried about the flamingos’ trousers, because
they saw that the trousers were made of snake skin.

3D Printing startups yet to get their mix right

On Friday, a family in France became the first in the world to move into a 3D
printed house- which took all of 54 hours to print, and cost about 20 % less than
an identical construction using more traditional solutions. Builders say it will become
even faster and cheaper to ‘print’ homes in the years to come, and the technology
will disrupt the industry. Last October, Netherlands opened the first 3D printed
concrete bridge for cyclists which took three months to create.

Houses, furniture, toys, shoes, clothing, medical implants and even tissues and
food are being 3D printed. Not yet on mass scale, but experiments are on. And
space sounds enormously promising. In India progress has been slower. The
technology is still used largely for school projects, which means funding is hard
to come by. About 70 % of the demand in India for printers comes from educational
institutions, compared to 50 % globally, says Gopal Krishna, co-founder of 3D printing
venture Global 3D.
Questions :
21. How is 3D printing house cheaper ?
22. What do Builders believe about 3D technology ?
23. In India, the technology is still used largely for school projects. Why ?

We sailed down the west coast of Africa to Cape Town. There, before heading east,
we took on two crewmen -American Larry Vigil and Swiss Herb Seigler - to help
us tackle one of the World’s roughest seas, the Southern Indian Ocean. On our
second day out of Cape Town, we began to encounter strong gales (storms). The
size of the waves was alarming - up to 15 metres, as high as our main mast.
At dawn (early morning) on January 2, the waves were gigantic. We were sailing
with only a small jib (a small triangular sail) and were still making eight knots (units
of speed).

Flambeau tore a brown-paper parcel out of his inner pocket and tore it to pieces. There
was nothing but paper and sticks of lead inside it. He sprang to his feet and cried: "I
don't believe you. I don't believe a fool like you could manage all that. You have still
got the cross, and if you don't give it up, I'll take it by force!" "No," said Father Brown
simply, and stood up also, "you won't take it by force. Firstly because I really haven't
still got it. And, secondly, because we are not alone"

Suspect Identification, Unit – 6, Read - 2

Fictional characters like Father Brown, Sherlock Holmes and Byomkesh Bakshi have
become legendary for their skills in identifying criminals without any technology. But
today, investigators rather use lots of new technologies to identify culprits. The most
popular and accurate of them all is DNA analysis.

1. Who are the legendary fictional characters in the World of investigation?

_______________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________

2. Which is the most popular and accurate method of investigation?

_______________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________
3. Write the similar word of ‘Criminal’ from the passage:

DNA is the most basic biological material that every human being has. Every cell in a
human being has thousands of DNA strands. This DNA is unique. Every person has a
unique 'DNA fingerprint'. This fingerprint can be identified using any available
evidence like blood, saliva, etc. Even a single hair is enough to identify it.

4. What is DNA?
_______________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________
5. How can DNA be tasted?
_______________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________
Advanced technology helps us to find this DNA fingerprint. It is transferred on sheets
in form of barcode patterns. Police use these to match them to the suspects. DNA
cannot be faked. Hence, it is the most scientific and effective instrument to use in
identifying suspects. That's why investigators prefer using this technique.

6. Why is DNA technique more trusted?

Dating Technology, Unit – 6, Read - 3

Dating objects and artefacts is an interesting area of investigation. Investigators need

to date objects to understand what happened around them and when it happened. It
also helps to understand at what time in history a particular object was used. Such
investigations are taken up by scholars studying historical civilizations, rocks, ancient
cultures or crime investigators etc.

1. What is Dating Technology?

_______________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________
2. How is Dating Technology useful for various scholars?
_______________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________

Several techniques are used to establish the ages of various ancient natural objects and
artifacts. Various methods are based on radioactivity. One method is radiocarbon
dating. Radiocarbon, or Carbon 14, is a form of the element Carbon. It is unstable and
weakly radioactive. The stable forms are Carbon 12 and Carbon 13. Carbon 14
constantly takes form and then changes in the upper atmosphere.
3. What is Radiocarbon technology?
_______________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________
4. Which are the stable forms of radiocarbon?
_______________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________

Other methods are also used like archaeomagnetic dating. This is based on reversal of
magnetic field of the Earth. Tree ring dating is another useful technique. Each year
changes occur within a tree by factors like rainfall, etc. These changes can be seen in
form of ring patterns within the tree trunks. These are used as a date 'fingerprint' in
this technique.

5. Which are the other methods of investigations?

How does it smell? Unit – 7, Read - 1

"Yummy .... This soup is very tasty!" You appreciate the hot vegetable soup, as you
take the first sip. But you are wrong. Actually you mean that the soup smells good.
Your sense of taste can tell you only whether the item is sweet, sour, salty or bitter. It
is not the tongue but your nose that reveals the true flavour of food. By tasting alone,
you can hardly differentiate between the food you love and the food you dislike.

1. It is not the nose but your tongue that reveals the true flavours of food. –
True/False

2. Which are the different tastes of food mentioned above?

_______________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________
3. Pick out the similar word from the passage: ‘Delicious
_______________________________________________________________
Flavours have a back door entry to nose. They travel from mouth down the throat and
up again along the air passages leading to nasal cavities. We 'smell' when we inhale
and we sense flavours when we exhale. The olfactory area is located high up the nasal
cavity. During ordinary inhaling, the air passes without arousing any smell sensations.
When we want or need to check the odour, we sniff. Sniffing carries the odour filled
air upward to olfactory area. There is no need to sniff when we eat. But when we
chew the food, warm vapour is released and flavours are detected. Higher the
temperature of a substance, the more molecules are given off and intense odours are
felt. Therefore, mummy insists on serving dishes hot.

4. What happens when we inhale and exhale?

_______________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________
5. Why does mummy insist on serving dishes hot?
_______________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________
6. Where is the olfactory area located?
_______________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________
The sense of smell is far more complex than the sense of taste. It is almost impossible
to prepare a table of objects and their standard smells. Mostly, there is never only one
smell for one object. Scientists use the term flavour profile for smells. They have
classified smells under such headings: ethereal, aromatic, fragrant, ambrosial, garlic,
burning, gouty and fetid. But this classification is still tentative and unsatisfying. It is
believed that each natural order of flavour is a blend of many smells.

7. Which term is used by the scientists for smells?

_______________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________
8. Name the headings for smell classified by scientists.
_______________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________
Do we differ much from one another in our sense of smell? Of course! There is some
variation in sense of smell of women than that of men's. Women have more acute
sense of smell than men have. And this sense becomes dull with aging, smoking and
drinking alcoholic beverages. When we have common cold, the smell receptors
located in about two and a half square centimetres in upper nasal cavity become dead.
Though the cold sufferer's sense of taste is not affected, he believes that he has lost the
sense of taste. Actually, his sense of smell is lost and therefore he is not able to
identify flavours of the food.

9. Men have more acute sense of smell than women have. – True/False

10. What happens when we suffer from common cold?

_______________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________
11. When does sense of smell become dull?

Touch, pressure, and pain- all require direct contact. Usually, hearing and sight are
like smell- long distance senses. Smell has its advantages: sight is (in a state of nature)
dependent on the sun and is to a great extent useless at night, but smell is on day and
night duty. Also, hearing is dependent on the production of sound. If animal A is
trying to locate animal B, animal B may succeed refraining from making a sound.
Odour, on the contrary, is not consciously controlled.

live in the mouths of animals like dogs and cats. The bites of these animals can lead to
the spread of diseases like rabies. Wash the wound well with soap and water. Take the
patient to the doctor immediately. The doctor will give some injections to prevent
rabies. Most of the snakes in Gujarat are non-poisons. In case of a venomous snake

Soil erosion is a major problem in countries like India. It occurs when the top layer of
the soil is washed away in successive steps by the action of water. It is mainly caused
by sudden bursts of heavy rainfall, the slope of the land, removal of the natural
protective coat of vegetation, the ruts along which water can flow rapidly, and the
absence of any checks to prevent the flow of water. It can be checked using various
preventive measures like the terracing of land, the construction of bunds (dams) to
check the flow of water and the planting of appropriate types of vegetation.

During the past few months, I have read many books on maintaining in India – almost
always among the Garhwal Mountains. This has been fascinating reading. I was
surprised and pleased to find that there is complete agreement among those
Englishmen and Americans who have taken part in these expeditions (adventurous
journeys) that Garhwal has the most beautiful mountains and valleys in the world. The
men who gave this opinion were widely travelled and knew what they are talking
about. This really applies to the higher regions of Garhwal and not to the dusty and
rather bare (without vegetation) valleys and hillsides below. In these upper regions

flamingo which at that time were all white, didn’t have anything to wear.
They felt ugly and ridiculous and they didn’t like any suit. Desperate they
went to the owl’s house who was the most prestigious dress maker of the
forest. She designed for them a pair of striped, white and black trousers.
These were the most marvellous suits that a flamingo had ever worn.
Now they could go to the party. When the day came everybody was very
happy, but the snakes were very worried about the flamingos’ trousers,
because they saw that the trousers were made of snake skin.

is interested in increasing the sale of his own product. Sometimes one

be good for you to know some of the techniques advertising agencies
employ in the sale of a product.

We human beings are very much taken by up by externals. The more

glossy an object appears, the more we are attracted to it. The power of
colour, for example, to knock us out of sense is shown by an experiment

Our Prime Minister, Naredrabhai Modi has started a cleanliness campaign

Cleanliness is not a work which we should do forcefully. It is a good

habit. It is a healthy way to live healthy life. All types of cleanliness are
necessary in life: personal cleanliness, surrounding cleanliness or work
place cleanliness (like school, college, office etc). We should not
compromise with cleanliness. It is rightly said that ‘Cleanliness, the first
law of Health’. The purpose of cleanliness is to get health, remove dirt
from surroundings as well as control pollution. We should also change
our habits. Generally we follow wrong practices and spit out on the roads,

should aware the students and people about cleanliness.

Thank you very much.
