Dilthey on Human Sciences

Life is not just a mere biological fact the we have in common with other living beings in
this world. For Dilthey, it is the experience that each individual has in all its complexity. To
merely depend on the life within and outside of him is not enough for a philosopher to come up
with reflections. He has to see life in a holistic point of view for man is a puzzle composed of
many pieces. The Human Sciences of Dilthey is an attempt to gather all the manifestation of
man’s life in order for the philosopher to come up with a more in depth understanding of human
life.
Human sciences have a common subject matter which is man. By saying “man” I refer to
his totality; his activities and his makings, his thoughts and his words as it evolves alongside
with the world. Human sciences unveil to us the different facets of human life. But it will only be
realized with the aid of Philosophy which enables human sciences to achieve methodological
clarity and receives from them in return, the factual insights which will contribute to deeper
understanding of man.
In our present times, there has a massive usage of the Social Media. We see a lot of
people. Their rants in life, sentiments (sometimes insightful but most of the time dull-witted).
Social Media has become a diary for most of the people nowadays wherein they encode what is
in their mind for all the people to see. But the most of the consumers of social media (including
me) are most of the times fall into rash judgments and hasty generalizations. Most of us have
read something in the facebook and ended up infuriated and cursing because what is before our
sight does not fit to the concepts that we have in mind.
Man is too complicated to be judged hastily for his being man is not just a product of
genetic and biological activity. He is a product of the history around him, the people around him,
the prevailing culture of his time, and many other aspects that molded him into an individual
peculiarly unique to others. In human sciences different facets of human manifestation and
experience are being studied in order to come up with an holistic view of man and his life. if we
will just keep in mind the complexity of man as man then I think there will be no bashers who
will spread toxicity in the minds of people. if one keeps in mind that an individual is unique to
his others in terms of how he is molded into being, then I think we will be more sensitive and
prudent with our words, thoughts, and actions.
A human being is “fearfully and wonderfully made” not only in a spiritual sense but also
in a philosophical point of view. Complexity may seem to be chaotic but it an inevitable
ingredient in life’s journey but that makes someone one of a kind from others.
