Editor’sNote

In the Now
“In today’s rush, we all think too much –
seek too much – want too much –
and forget about the joy of just being”
~ Eckhart Tolle

Living in the moment – a simple concept, perhaps not as easily executed. If only it were a
breeze to filter out the barrage of drifting thoughts and bask in just being. The benefits of
not getting bogged down by the past, or panicking about tomorrow are clear, so why can
focusing on the present seem nearly impossible?

When you’ve experienced a fleeting minute of mindfulness, whether zoning out in nature
or savasana post yoga, it’s easy to understand the appeal of reaching that point. Even a few
seconds free from worry, expectation, criticism, however self-inflicted, can do wonders.
And the possibility that we can achieve it on our own with a little practice is motivation
enough to embrace any technique, class or app.

Thinking of nothing, or everything, seem to be the two main approaches to meditation,

the fast track to mindfulness. The vagueness in itself can be enough to put off sceptics, so
finding a method that comes to you naturally can make all the difference. For example
concentrating on colour could be effective for a visual person, whereas music may be more
relatable to those attuned to sound. Whatever works for you.

Neither mindfulness nor meditation need take place within a tranquil, candlelit sanctuary.
That’s the goal anyway – to be able to tune out distractions when savouring a meal, or better
yet, tackling crowds between meetings in a frenzied metropolis. And the skill of noticing
surroundings, sounds, sensations and your breath in any situation is the best brain training.

To give you a head start, this issue lets you in on how to eat with intent (p.58), vipassana
meditation for better emotional intelligence (p.60) and the role technology plays in ramping
up self-awareness (p.88).

Mind over matter indeed.

Its menu, though expansive, is divided
not only by treatment, but also objectives
such as energise, synchronise, nourish,

Audiovisual Well-Being
How light and sound can positively influence your brain and health

Light and sound have been used

to treat various symptoms and illnesses since
the beginnings of modern medicine. In the
last 30 years, this dual process has been
fine-tuned and become known as audio-
visual entrainment, using flashing lights
and rhythmic tones to entrain brain waves
toward a desired rhythm or frequency to
change and improve brain function. Audio-
visual entrainment can be used to treat
low moods, depression, seasonal affective
disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder
and head traumas, such as concussion. It
can offer a breakthrough when traditional
methods have been exhausted, and provides
an alternative to medication. This method
is becoming more popular in medical
practices and wellness centres worldwide.
David Siever is the authority on audio-
visual entrainment and founder of this
treatment, who has published research in
the field over the last 30 years. He and
other experts administer the audio-visual
entrainment method to create constant,

and fully supportive because he knows that
I need the mental stimulation of working.
Holidays are now factored in, although

Based in London, Percival is a city girl at

many different experiences one can enjoy
in a city like London. We have some of
the best restaurants in the world, stunning
architecture and design, access to the best

city life so interesting.”
However, Percival’s still values the
well-being benefits of rural living, and is
sometimes just what the doctor ordered.

As well as weekly walks around Hyde

maintains internal equilibrium through

SENSING THE MOMENT AT ANGSANA SPA

ANGSANA SPA TAKES its name from the exotic Angsana Tree – a tall, tropical rainforest tree noted for its crown of golden, fragrant flowers,
which bursts into bloom unexpectedly. The Angsana teaches one to live life spontaneously, to sense the moment and savour time as it passes
inexorably. Its refreshing blend of treatments places special emphasis on the use of natural ingredients such as native flowers and fruits. It is
based on the use of aromatherapy, the therapeutic sense of touch, and a fusion of techniques from the East and West to refresh and
rejuvenate the body, mind and spirit.
All Angsana Spa therapists are formally trained in the art of touch based on the stringent curriculum of the Banyan Tree Spa
Academies located in Phuket in Thailand, and Bintan in Indonesia. Banyan Tree Spa Academy in Phuket is accredited by Thailand’s
Ministry of Education and Ministry of Public Health and Banyan Tree Spa Academy Bintan is licensed by Indonesia’s Ministry
of Education. The dedicated training facilities ensure that our therapists deliver high-quality service consistently to exceed the
expectations of the most discerning spa enthusiasts, a promise many have come to trust in the Angsana Spa experience.
The signature Angsana Massage was created exclusively for Angsana Spa. Using Euphoria Oil, extracts from ylang-ylang, Litsea
cubeba and sweet basil, this unique treatment promotes concentration and improves blood circulation.

TOKYO, JAPAN
THE SPA AT MANDARIN ORIENTAL, TOKYO
THE SAKURA RITUAL by the Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo is a Japanese
immersion journey that begins by paying respect to ancient cultural traditions
that involve washing the feet of visitors as they enter a home. We encourage our
guests to take the time to peacefully transition from the outside world while we
learn about your needs. It continues with the Azuki Bean Scrub, an ultra gentle but
highly effective exfoliation of sesame seeds, salt and finely ground Japanese azuki
beans known to contain saponaria, an organic foaming agent that naturally draws
out impurities from the skin while promoting circulation. The Japanese believe that
azuki is a powerful, non-surgical alternative to a skin lift, so visible are the tightening
and moisturising effects on the skin. We honour another Japanese tradition with
Kiatsu, an original, all-over body massage that blends the most effective therapies
of Japanese shiatsu and Thai Massage to relieve tight muscles through movements
and gentle stretching.

Relais Christine, Paris

Once a medieval abbey, Relais Christine is now a boutique hotel located in the heart of
Saint-Germaine-des-Prés on the Left Bank. Despite its convenient location – just a short
walk from prestigious restaurants, galleries, boutiques, the Latin Quarter and famous
sights such as Notre-Dame and the Louvre – the 48-key abode is a sanctuary hidden
behind wrought iron gates on Rue Christine, where a green courtyard and a honey-stone
townhouse promise tranquillity.
While the mansion has been transformed into an elegant hotel with a mix of
contemporary design and period features, its history can still be seen in the vaulted
ceilings, ancient fireplaces and wood panelling. Parisian charm imbues each individually
styled guest room, featuring antiques, rich woodwork and velvet. The most sought-after
rooms are the Garden Suites, which boast a terrace on a closed garden and extra space.
After a long day out, there is little more relaxing than unwinding in the cosy lounges
with a cup of tea, a snack, or a cocktail at the bar. For indulgent ‘me’ time, the Spa
Guerlain is nestled beneath the 13th-century vaults, housing two intimate treatment
rooms, Jacuzzi, sauna and an exercise room. The spa menu isn’t extensive, but covers
essential pampering needs from massages and facials to waxing and mani-pedis.

Farmer’s Cafe, Mumbai

Healthy weekday lunches can be dull, with blah greens and bland sandwiches. But a new spot in Pali Hill Bandra,
Mumbai injects life into wholesome offerings. Farmer’s Cafe, Mumbai takes pride in incorporating superfoods in
its menu, all without mention of the word ‘salad’.
Fuel up with the Body Booster, a combination of coconut milk, coriander and ginger or sink your teeth into
the All Day Breakfast section which offers everything from eggs benedict and akuri eggs to a vegan tofu akuri,
breakfast tartines with nutritious toppings and a savoury farmer’s pancake served with vegan cilantro mayonnaise.
For something more substantial, pizzas here are guilt-free, made with a whole-wheat base, organic cheese
and sport whimsical names. The High School Pizza is topped with a trio of skim cheeses, sundried tomatoes and
jalapenos for a spicy kick; Just Kale It comes with roasted sweet potatoes and, of course, the leafy green; while the Thai
Farmer combines herbed tofu, bell peppers, broccoli, carrots and peanut sauce. Meat eaters can opt for the English
Breakfast Pizza with eggs, or the Vitamin Sea with smoked salmon, roasted bell peppers and caramelised onions.
Vegans with a sweet tooth are in for a treat as desserts here are gluten-free and made using organic jaggery:
the skinny chocolate cake, chocolate almond pudding and farmer’s rice pudding are favourites.

BucketList
THE ULTIMATE INDULGENCE

Aman Sveti Stefan

Situated at the heart of Montenegro’s sun-drenched coastline, the fortified island of Sveti Stefan is perhaps one of its
most iconic images. The restored village lies across the bay from Villa Miločer, a former royal retreat, and features
80 acres of grounds, two kilometres of beaches and a standalone Aman Spa. Should you be compelled to explore
further, the property is a short drive or sail away from the ancient town of Budva and UNESCO-protected Bay of Kotor.
But given its beautifully restored 50 rooms, cottages and suites feature hand-rendered stucco, stone and local oak,
keeping with the village’s rustic legacy, with views of the sea or gardens – it’s likely you won’t feel the need to leave
at all. You can also stay at 19th-century Villa Miločer on the mainland, a residence home to six suites, with another
two in a separate building, surrounded by 800 olive trees, ancient pine and cedar forests.
All-day dining is available at Villa Miločer at its dining room and wisteria-draped loggia, but the estate is filled with
intimate eateries with menus that celebrate local culinary heritage. On the main island, have breakfast or an evening
bite in the picturesque piazza. For fine dining, Aman Signature is your best option. If you’re lucky, you may even be
treated to a firework display from one of the neighbouring beaches, popular for private events.
There’s no shortage of paradisal beaches. Nearest is the 170m stretch of pink-pebble Sveti Stefan Beach. Further
along, set beneath Villa Miločer is the 280m King’s Beach. But our favourite is the 130m secluded Queen’s Beach,
exclusive to Aman guests, in a charming lagoon known to be one of the Adriatic’s most stunning spots.
