Chapter (10)

THE CRITICAL STATE LINE AND THE ROSCOE SURFACE

(1) Calculation of the failure conditions in an undrained test. The values of the soil
constants for a clay are N = 3.25, λ = 0.20, Γ = 3.16 and M = 0.94. A Sample of the
clay is isotropically normally consolidated to p ' = 400 kNm-2 and is then subjected to
a standard undrained triaxial compression test. Calculate the values of q ' , p ' , and υ
at failure.

(2) Calculation of the failure conditions in an drained test. The values of the soil constants
for a clay are N = 3.25, λ = 0.20, Γ = 3.16 and M = 0.94. A Sample of the clay is

isotropically normally consolidated to p ' = 400 kNm-2, where υ0 = 2.052 and is then
subjected to a standard drained compression test. Calculate the values of q ' , p ' , υt
and ∈υ at failure.

(3) Calculation of the failure conditions in an undrained test. The values of the soil
constants for a clay are N = 4.75, λ = 0.30, Γ = 4.16 and M = 0.94. A Sample of the
clay is isotropically normally consolidated to p ' = 700 kNm-2 and is then subjected to
a standard undrained triaxial compression test. Calculate the values of q ' , p ' , and υ
at failure.

(4) Calculation of the failure conditions in an drained test. The values of the soil constants
for a clay are N = 4.75, λ = 0.30, Γ = 4.16 and M = 0.94. A Sample of the clay is

isotropically normally consolidated to p ' = 700 kNm-2, where υ0 = 2.209 and is then
subjected to a standard drained compression test. Calculate the values of q ' , p ' , υt
and ∈υ at failure.
