W H A T I S A C N E ?

Our Integumentary System is our body’s

outer layer. It’s made up of our skin,
nails, hair and the glands and nerves on
our skin. Our integumentary system acts
as a physical barrier — protecting your
body from bacteria, infection, injury and
sunlight. It also helps regulate our body
temperature and allows us to feel skin
sensations like hot and cold.

Acne, clinically known as acne vulgaris, is a common human skin disease

Acne develops as a result of blockages in hair follicles.

Enlargement of sebaceous glands and an increase in sebum
production occur with increased androgen production
during puberty and directly before menstruation.

Acne can be prevented and mitigated by following these tips:

Wash your face regularly: Washing your face twice a day with a mild cleanser can help remove
excess oil, dirt, and sweat that can clog hair follicles and lead to acne.
Know your skin type: Knowing your skin type can help you choose the right products and avoid
those that can irritate your skin.
Moisturize: Using a moisturizer can help keep your skin hydrated and prevent dryness that can
lead to acne.
Avoid touching your face: Touching your face can transfer bacteria and oil from your hands to
your face, which can contribute to acne.
Limit sun exposure: Overexposure to the sun can cause skin damage and inflammation that can
worsen acne.
Avoid popping pimples: Popping pimples can cause inflammation, infection, and scarring.
Use topical and oral medications: Topical and oral medications such as retinoids, antibiotics, and
birth control pills can help reduce acne.
Consider phototherapy and chemical peels: Phototherapy and chemical peels can help reduce
acne by killing bacteria and removing dead skin cells.
Eat a healthy diet: Eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein can help
reduce inflammation and improve skin health1.
Manage stress: Stress can trigger hormonal changes that can lead to acne. Managing stress
through exercise, meditation, or other relaxation techniques can help reduce acne
