Teacher’s Activity: Student’s Activity:

T: Class, when you hear the word ‘DRAMA’, S: Acting.
what comes in your mind?

T: That’s right. Acting is totally related with

drama. Drama involved acting.

T: Remember class that dramatic situations

are all around us. We even use the word
drama in our conversations with people? For
example, when someone is over reacting or
very emotional, we refer them as drama kings
or queens.

But in literature, Drama refers to a play, or a

piece of writing that is presented almost
exclusively through dialogue.
Drama is a Greek word “Dran” means S: Short stories are being read by people,
“action/ to do”. It is a form of literature that whereas dramas are being acted and
is performed for an audience, either on performed in front of people.
stage or before a camera.
Let us try to compare it with a short story.
What do you think the difference from the
way these two types of literature when being
presented to people?

T: Exactly. Short stories are prose narrative.

Narrator describes characters, actions and
settings. The character’s words are marked by
“quotation marks” Unlike short story, Drama
is being performed or acted, and watched by
people called the audience. It consist entirely
of character’s words and actions. S: (One of the students answer the question)

T: The place where drama is being performed

is called the theater. It is a stage being
decorated or designed to look like the actual
or real place that is meant to be portrayed in
that play such as a living room, a bedroom, a
park, or a classroom, etc.

If the writer of a short story is called the

author, What do we call to the writers of a
piece of drama?

T: That’s right. The person who wrote a

drama is called playwright.

T: Just like a short story, a drama has its

essential elements.
S: Yes ma’am.
• The first one is the theme. This refers
to the meaning of the play. It is the
main idea or lesson to be learned from S: (Students will volunteer to answer.)
the play.

• The second element is the plot or the

action. This element refers to the
events in the play or drama. The basic
storyline of the play. Structure of the
play doesn’t really differ from that in
prose. There is an exposition, a rising
action, a climax, falling action and the
resolution.

T: Let us refer to these pictures again. If you

will observe properly, do the pictures present
a sequence of events?

T: Based on your answers a while ago, what

have you observed?

• The third element of drama is the

characters. These are the people
presented in the play that are involved
in the perusing plot. Each character
should have his/ her distinct
personality, age, appearance, beliefs,
socio-economic background, and
language.

• The fourth element is language. This

refers to the word choices made by the
playwright and the enunciation of the
actors of the language.

• The fifth element is the music. Music

can expand to all sound effects, the
actor’s voices, songs, and
instrumental music played as
underscore in a play.

• And the last element of a drama is the

spectacle. In theatre, this refers to all
involved aspects of scenery,
costumes, and special effects in a
production.

F. Generalization

T: What are the difference between
short story and drama when being S: Short stories are being read by people,
