Gressman Original Clue 4: The Summit Awaits!

This clue is honoring Radia Perlman (Computer Science). Dr. Perlman obtained her Ph.D. in computer science
in 1988 from MIT. After graduating, she went to work for Digital Eq uipment Corporation (DEC), where she
made most of the conceptual innovations for which she is famous. These include protocols she designed in
the 1980s (IS-IS), which continue to be used for routing Internet Protocol (IP) to this day. To learn more
about her work click here:https://lemelson.mit.edu/resources/radia-perlman. To read a short bio click here:

top 50 women in STEM.

We're approaching higher elevations where the air is thin and physicial activity becomes a challenge. This
section looks familiar. Is it a mirage or thin air? No! It's an old friend revisited.
Designer Notes: Instructions for edge stitches do
not appear in this clue. Refer to Clue 1A if you
need a reminder of how to work your edges.
When 2 numbers are given, the first numbers is
for the scarf, the second number is for the cowl.
Mosaic Chart 3:
Mosaic Patterns are charted only.
Edge stitch(es) do not appear on chart.
Turquoise squares indicate MC
White squares indicate CC1.
You will only be working with 1 color at a time.
The color at the beginning of the chart indicates
the color you will be working.
Carry other colors loosely up side of work
Work stitches before the red line one time, work
stitches outlined in red 5, (11) times, then work
stitches after the red line one time.
Work the 18 row pattern only once.
You will be using CC1 for the section so you may
prefer to carry it loosely up the side instead of
cutting it.

At this point, instructions have been

divided into 2 separate patterns, the
first is for the Scarf beginning on page
3, the second is for the Cowl beginning
on page 7.

Explanation of Optional Path Through the Boulders:
This design was meant to represent the path we follow as we journey through life. Sometimes we encounter
obstacles along the way that cause us detour, but hopefully never quit!
This path is meant to be personal to you. You should feel free to leave it out entirely, copy the example
provided below, use the same path you used in Clue 2 or create a new path here. Not every obstacle is
conquered by using the same tactics!
Ways to create your path:
• Use Fair Isle to create your path as you knit using a different color. Put your path in one repeat of the
Blockweave or any number of repeats.
• Use Intasia to create your path as you knit.

• Make your path in Stockinette Stitch using your working yarn and go back after you finish and high
light your path using duplicate stitch.

• Crochet your path using a chain stitch after you complete the section. Begin wherever you please and
end wherever it feels right for you.

• Bead your path!

Example of possible knit path:
The colored blocks are not meant to indicate which color to you, they are just to show you possible
placement.
