Physical and Chemical Properties Of Matter

February 1st 2024

Part A

1) Classify the six underlined properties in the following paragraphs as chemical pr

physical.

Physical Chemical
Melts at -220oC Reacts with most
substances.
Boils at -188o C Metals burn in fluorine.
Gas 19grams of fluorine will
react with 1.0 grams of
hydrogen.

2) Classify each of the following changes as physical or chemical.

Physical Chemical
Condensation of steam Souring of milk
Melting of gold Burning of gasoline
Diluting of sugar in water
3) Classify each of the following changes as physical or chemical.

Physical Chemical
Ice melting Coal burning
Magnetizing a screwdriver Explosion of a firecracker
Mixing chocolate syrup
with milk

4) The increased volume of oxygen is a physical change. The sample is the same
only the amount changed.

5) The combination of hydrogen gas and oxygen gas to produce water vapor is a
chemical change. Hydrogen reacts with oxygen in heat to make water water
vapor.

6) Intensive properties is matter that doesn’t depend on the amount of substance

present like color, melting point and boiling point. Extensive is not the same, it
depends on the amount of substance being measured like Mass, Weight and
Volume.

7) Identify the following properties.

Intensive Extensive
Temperature Volume
Humidity Heat
Boiling Point

8) When the property like density is independent on the amount of sample

measured is is an intensive property.
