Biography Jendral Sudirman

General Sudirman's brief biography begins with his early life and education. Sudirman
(Soedirman) was born in Purbalingga, Central Java on January 24 1916. His father
Karsid Kartawiraji was a worker at the Kalibagor Banyumas sugar factory and his
mother Siyem was a descendant of Wedana Rembang.

Since childhood, Sudirman was raised by a sub-district head named Raden


Cokrosunaryo. Sudirman was not told that Cokrosunaryo was not his biological father
until he was 18 years old.

When he was seven years old, Sudirman was enrolled in a native school (hollandsch
inlandsche school). Sudirman was transferred to Taman Siswa's middle school in his
seventh year of school. In his eighth year, Sudirman moved to Wirotomo Middle
School after the Taman Siswa school was closed by the Illegal Schools Ordinance
because it was found to be unregistered.

He then continued his education at HIK (teacher's school) Muhammadiyah, Solo but
did not finish. While studying there, he also took part in the activities of the Hizbul
Wathan Scout organization.

In 1936, Sudirman married Alfiah, his former school friend and the daughter of a rich
batik entrepreneur named Raden Sastroatmojo. After getting married, Sudirman lived
at his in-laws' house in Cilacap so he could save to build his own house.

Sudirman and Alfiah This couple was later blessed with three sons; Ahmad Tidarwono,
Muhammad Teguh Bambang Tjahjadi, and Taufik Effendi, as well as four daughters;
Didi Praptiastuti, Didi Sutjiati, Didi Pudjiati, and Titi Wahjuti Satyaningrum.
