What is the definition of dance?

Dance is a performing art form consisting of sequences
of movement, either improvised or purposefully selected.
This movement has aesthetic and often symbolic value.
Dance can be categorized and described by its
choreography, by its repertoire of movements, or by its
historical period or place of origin. Dancing is taken as a
form of nonverbal communication that is used to express
emotions, ideas or tell a story. Dances are social,
participatory or performed for an audience.

What is social dancing?

Social dancing is partner dancing that is informal, relaxed, and
danced for the enjoyment of the partners rather than to meet
the criteria of a dance school or an audience. Social dancing is
danced for enjoyment, socialization, recreation and health. The
test for social dancing success is how much the dance
partners have enjoyed the dance - not how they have danced
in the eyes of others or how "correctly" they have danced.
What is dance sport?
Dance sport is a dancing competition which includes
ballroom dancing and is different from the exhibition
dance. All the dancers perform their dancing skills along
with athletic abilities, delivering captivating performances.
The participants perform the Dance sport competition in
pairs. They try to perform their entire choreography on a
piece of particular music, maintaining the tempo.

Kinds of Modern Standard

The five Modern Standard dances are the Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Slow Foxtrot and
Quickstep.

The Waltz is a smooth dance that travels around the line of dance. Characterized by its “rise
and fall” action, the Waltz includes a step, slide, and step in 3/4 time.

Tango is a dance with dramatic flair, using “stalking” and “sneaking” walking characteristics that
separate it from the other ballroom dancing styles.

Viennese Waltz is a fast paced (180 beats a minute) rotary dance where the dancers are
constantly turning either in a clockwise (natural) or counter-clockwise (reverse) direction
interspersed with non-rotating change steps to switch between the directions of rotation.

Slow Foxtrot is a beautiful, elegant dance, but it is notorious for being the most difficult of
the standard ballroom dances.

Quickstep is a modern dance, it can be called the “dance of joy”, because its main figures are
quite simple, and the tempo of the music and the mood of the dance seems to be inviting to a
carefree interpretation of its bright rhythm.
