Learning inside school gives pleasure and
enthusiasm to the students. It is the national way of learning. This learning is linked to students’ lives and a variety of different teaching methods are used in school whereas, out of school learning consists of curriculum and non curriculum learning experiences for pupils. PURPOSE OF LEARNING IN SCHOOL • To develop the students in cognitive and physical skills required for leading a successful day to day life. • To make them learn good conduct, ethical behaviour and personal hygiene. • To make students learn the elements of culture in which they live (language, social and practice, ethics and laws accumulated and conserved over generation). • Providing adequate opportunities for students to get training in higher order, mental abilities such as inquiry, logical thinking, value analysis and clarification and solving problems faced in day to day life. • To prepare them to become good citizens to discharge their duties. • To make them acquire the basic knowledge of vocational skills to become self – reliant in their future life. PURPOSE OF LEARNING OUTSIDE THE SCHOOL Life skills and problem solving skills are necessary for everyone. These can be learned only from real life situation. As such learning outside the school becomes essential for everyone. • Developing social skills collaborating with fellow students and sharing learning with others. • Getting training in context specific skills. • Developing the ability to adopt the day to day life situation. • Collecting basic information about a particular lesson. • After learning a particular lesson integrating the information and ideas to realize personally how they are being used in pratical life. • Overcome learning disabilities. • Create fun and enjoyment. CONCEPT OF OUT OF SCHOOL LEARNING
Deschooling society introduced in 1974, the concept
of out of school learning started gaining popularity. All experiences that students get both academic year non – academic from outside the school are included in out of school learning. At present learning from home using electronic media particularly the internet is also included by some under out of school learning. DIFFERENCE BETWEEN IN SCHOOL LEARNING AND OUT SCHOOL LEARNING Following are the differences between learning inside and outside the classroom: • Learning inside side the classroom means learning indoors in a room whereas learning outside the classroom means learning outdoor in an open area. • There is less distraction and more focus on the students learning inside the classroom. There may be a greater distraction and less focus on the students learning outside the classroom. • Learning inside involves more theoretical knowledge whereas learning outside the classroom will more practical experience. • Learning inside the classroom is more structured and formal whereas Learning outside the classroom is less structured and informal. • The focus is short - term in inside the classroom. The focus is long – term in learning outside the classroom. • Fewer students are likely to be interested in the learning process inside the classroom as it mostly involves lectures. More students are likely to be interested in the learning process outside the classroom as it involves practical work and involves everyone in it. • Learning inside the classroom focuses on student knowledge, discipline and skills whereas learning inside the classroom focus more on behaviour, values and attitudes. Taking classes outside the classroom is a healthy
way to learn and is also good for mental and physical health. It enables the possibility of exercise, walking, as well as an increase of the mind’s capacity. Outdoor learning isn’t only about relating things to studies, but we can also learn a lot through adventure. In the classroom, we are taught through experience, which is the best teacher of all.
