The Tones Marks

In writing, we use the tone marks ‘ ’(1st tone), ‘ ’(2nd tone), ‘ ’(3rd tone) and
‘ ’(4th tone) on the main vowel. We indicate the tone marks according to the following
sequence:

a) When ‘ i ’ bears a tone mark, we have to drop the dot above i. E.g. nJ, kuH, and
zhuK.

b) If ‘ i ’ and ‘ u ’ appear simultaneously in a syllable, the tone mark falls on the one
which comes second.

c) When a second syllable starts with ‘a’, ‘o’, ‘e’ , we have to add the dividing marks
(’) to avoid confusion.
E.g. pI’=o, jH’G.

d) When a syllable appears without a tone mark, we pronounce the syllable light and
short. We call this neutral tone. E.g. gDge, shHfu, and ku?zi.
