Basic differentiation: The product, quotient and chain rules

Homework: Unit 3 Chapter 1 Differentiation

𝑑𝑦
Recall that 𝑑𝑥 = 𝑓′(𝑥) is the gradient function of the curve 𝑦 = 𝑓(𝑥).

For example,
𝑑𝑦 𝑑2 𝑦
If 𝑦 = 2𝑥 5 then 𝑑𝑥
= 10𝑥 4 and 𝑑𝑥 2 = 40𝑥 3 .

The gradient of the curve 𝑦 = 2𝑥 5 at the point (1,2) is 10(1)4 = 10.

𝑑𝑦
By using the chain rule, if 𝑦 = [𝑓(𝑥)]𝑛 then 𝑑𝑥 = 𝑛[𝑓(𝑥)]𝑛−1 𝑓′(𝑥). For example,
𝑑𝑦
If 𝑦 = (𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 + 1)6 then = 6(𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 + 1)5 (2𝑥 + 3).
