Architectural Design Process

First Semester, SY 2019 - 2020

Dear Class,

It has been my pleasure to be a part of your studies in TIP Manila.

I hope the following materials can help you in your journey towards
being architects.

The following are my personal compilation. My request is that you

use them only in your studies and not for any other reason.

Thank you class.

Ar. Renee Borromeo

What is
design?
Design
To conceive, contrive, or
devise the structure of a
building or other
construction.
Conceive
To form an idea or conception in the mind.

Contrive
To form in an artistic or ingenious manner.

Devise
To form in the mind by new combinations
or applications of existing ideas or
applications.
Good design?
Bad design?
Design does not always
lead simply and inevitably
to a single, obvious,
correct answer.
In fact, there is often
more than one solution
to a design problem.
A design may be good in
the judgment of the
designer, the client, or the
people who experience
and use the design for
any of several reasons.
• Because it functions well—it
works.
• Because it is affordable—it is
economical, efficient, and durable.
• Because it looks good—it is
aesthetically pleasing.
• Because it recreates a feeling
remembered from another time
and place—it carries meaning.
At times, we may judge a
design to be good because
we feel it follows current
design trends or because of
the impression it will make
on others—it is in fashion,
or it enhances our status.
There are several meanings that
can be conveyed by a design.
Some operate at a level generally
understood and accepted by the
general public.
Others are more readily
discerned by specific groups of
people.
Successful designs
usually operate at more
than one level of
meaning and thus
appeal to a wide range
of people.
If a design does not express
an idea, communicate a
meaning, or elicit a
response, either it will be
ignored or it will appear to
be a bad design.
The goal?
•express an idea
•communicate a
meaning
•elicit a response.
A good design, therefore,
should be understandable
to its audience.
Knowing why something
was done helps to make a
design comprehensible.
The purpose of any
design is to organize its
parts into a coherent
whole in order .
There is a
process…
Process
A systematic series of
actions or operations leading
or directed to a particular
end.
Why is having a
process
important?
A process lets you divide a goal into
manageable chunks…
It lets you see the step by step
actions you need to take…
A process helps you see where to
begin, where you want to go to,
and how to get there…
A process can be repeated and be
improved on…
Phase
A particular stage in a
process of change or
development.
Program
A procedure for solving a
problem, as a statement
setting forth the context,
conditions, requirements,
and objectives for a design
project.
What is a
design
process?
Design Process
A purposeful activity aimed
at devising a plan for
changing an existing
situation to future preffered
state.
How do you get from a concept to
a piece of architecture?
Why do some ideas work better
than others?
What is a "good" design?
Questions like these can make
design seem mystifying, especially
because the answer is that there is
no one right way to design.
But understanding how
the design process
works is an essential
part of an architecture
student's development.
Preparation
Initiation
Collecting and analyzing
Identify the problem information, establishing goals
and criteria for solution

Synthesis
Evaluation
Discovering constraints and
Testing, simulating opportunities, hypothesizing
alternatives

Action Reevaluation
Selecting and implementing Assessing how well the
the best solution solution was
