country in WORLD WAR I

WWI
World War I, called the Great War at the time, was a global war
originating in Europe lasting from July 28, 1914, to November
11, 1918. The United States declared war on Germany on April
6, 1917. Described at the time as the “war to end all wars,”
it led to the mobilization of more than 70 million military
personnel. An estimated 9 million combatants and 7 million
civilians died as a direct result of the war. The war was also
considered a contributory factor in a number of genocides
and the 1918 influenza epidemic, which caused between 50
to 100 million deaths worldwide. It precipitated major political
changes between the years 1917 to 1923, including revolutions
in many of the nations involved in WWI. Unresolved rivalries
between some European countries at the end of the conflict
contributed to the start of the Second World War.

country in WORLD WAR II

WWII
World War II was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945.
The vast majority of the world’s countries, including all the great
powers, eventually formed two opposing military alliances:
the Allies: Britain, France, Russia and the U.S. vs. the Axis: Ger-
many, Italy and Japan. The United States became involved in
the fighting after the bombing of the Pearl Harbor Navel Base
on Dec. 7, 1941. Italian forces surrendered on Oct. 13, 1943,
the German armies on May 7, 1945, and the Japanese on Aug.
15, 1945. World War II directly involved more than 100 million
people from over 30 countries. It was the deadliest conflict in
human history, marked by 50 to 85 million fatalities. It included
massacres, the genocide of the Holocaust, strategic bombing,
premeditated death from starvation and disease, and the first
use of nuclear weapons in war.

country in the COLD WAR
The Cold War was a state of geopolitical tension

COLD WAR between the Soviet Union with its satellite states
(the Eastern Bloc), and the United States with its
allies (the Western Bloc) after World War II. The
conflict began with 1946, with a U.S. foreign policy of
containment of the Soviet expansionism threatening
strategically vital regions, and ending between the
Revolutions of 1989 and the 1991 collapse of the
USSR, which ended Soviet-style communism in
Eastern Europe. The term “cold war” is used because
there was no large-scale fighting directly between
the two sides, but they each supported major
regional wars. The post-WWII split of Germany into
East and West Germany with Berlin split east and west
as well, was a major long-term area of tension. The
highest risk of direct nuclear war between the USSR
and U.S. came with the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.

country in the VIETNAM WAR

American / Vietnam War, was a conflict that occurred in

Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia from Nov. 1, 1955, until the
fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975. It was the second of the
Indochina Wars and was officially fought between the Viet
Minh, a communist organization led by Hồ Chí Minh in
North Vietnam and the government of South Vietnam. The
North Vietnamese army was supported by the Soviet Union,
China, and other communist allies; the South Vietnamese
army was supported by the United States, South Korea,

VIETNAM
Australia, Thailand and other anti-communist allies. The war
is considered a Cold War-era proxy war. The war would last
approximately 19 years and would also form the Laotian Civil
War as well as the Cambodian Civil War, which resulted in all
three countries becoming communist states in 1975.

country in the GULF WAR

GULF WAR
The Gulf War fought in 1991 had two phases, the first was
called Operation Desert Shield which ran from Aug. 2, 1990,
to Jan. 17, 1991 and consisted of operations to the buildup of
troops for the defense of Saudi Arabia and and the second
Operation Desert Storm from Jan. 17, 1991 to Feb. 28, 1991, was
the combat phase. It was a war waged by coalition forces from
35 nations led by the United States against Iraq in response
to Iraq’s invasion and annexation of Kuwait. Iraq had built up
its occupying army in Kuwait to about 300,000 troops. The
potential threat Iraq’s invasion posed to Saudi Arabia, prompted
the United States and its western European NATO allies to rush
troops to Saudi Arabia to deter a possible attack. Egypt and
several other Arab nations joined the anti-Iraq coalition and
contributed forces to the military buildup.

country in AFGHANISTAN

AFGHANISTAN
The War in Afghanistan code named Operation Enduring
Freedom (2001–2014) and Operation Freedom’s Sentinel (2015–
present) followed the United States invasion of Afghanistan
on Oct. 7, 2001. The U.S. was supported initially by the United
Kingdom and Canada and later by a coalition of over 40
countries, including all NATO members. The war’s public
aims were to dismantle al-Qaeda and to deny it a safe base of
operations in Afghanistan by removing the Taliban from power.
A surge in troop numbers began in 2009 and continued to
increase through 2011 when roughly 140,000 foreign troops
operated under ISAF and U.S. command in Afghanistan. Of
these 100,000 were Americans. On May 1, 2011, United States
Navy SEALs killed Osama bin Laden in Abbotabad, Pakistan.
Currently there are around 14,000 U.S. troupes in Aghanistan

country in the IRAQ WAR

IRAQ WAR
The Iraq War was a protracted armed conflict that began
in 2003 with the invasion of Iraq by a United States-led
coalition that overthrew the government of Saddam Hussein.
The conflict continued for much of the next decade as an
insurgency emerged to oppose the occupying forces and
the post-invasion Iraqi government. An estimated 151,000
to 600,000 or more Iraqis were killed in the first 3-4 years of
conflict. The U.S. became re-involved in 2014 at the head
of a new coalition; the insurgency and many dimensions
of the civil armed conflict continue. The invasion occurred
as part of a declared war against international terrorism
and its sponsors under the administration of U.S. President
George W. Bush following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and
destruction of the World Trade Center in New York City.
