The first period of the School Year focused on the Kindergarteners’ abilities to learn more about
themselves, the school, and their environment. They have learned about their physical growing
selves, building, and nurturing relationships with friends and teachers, and changes in their
surroundings. The objectives for this period are all about knowing oneself and the physical body
and adapting to changes in school and their surroundings.
Progress Summary:
1. Language Development
We focused on building the children’s vocabulary, developing listening skills, and the ability to
follow multiple instructions. We have also piqued their interest in reading and building skills
necessary for reading and writing. As a whole, we worked on developing the child’s interest in
language-based activities.
Hal is a confident, fun loving boy who takes his everyday life as an opportunity for learning. He loves
learning new vocabulary words and incorporates them in his daily interaction with friends and teachers.
He is also good at reading phrases and sentences with sight words and C-V-C’s in it. He can spell
through dictation or at time a visual
2. Motor Development
a. Gross Motor
PE and outdoor activities were focused on developing and improving the children’s coordination
and ability to control their body movement. They have developed their control of speed and
direction while moving and built the awareness of their bodies, movement, and the space around
them.
Hal has displayed an incredible stage presence and musicality during the Annual Winter Carnival. Danced
to the song “New York, New York” with accuracy and precision. His role as the ‘’newsies” into the dance
introduction gave it the old Broadway spectacle. He delivered his line flawlessly. Hal also gained a lot of
exercise and muscle coordination practice through playing at the park with friends and teachers.
b.Fine Motor
The children built the coordination and strength of small muscles in the hands and fingers. The
Arts and Crafts activities focused on improving their grip on tools and developing control while
drawing/writing and other pre-writing activities. Practical Life activities allow them the
independence to do smaller but significant matters in daily life such as dressing, washing hands,
etc.
Hal enjoys all table top activities provided to him and focuses on the task at hand. His pencil grip is strong
and in consequence his writing strokes are both deep and firm. This is attributed to his interest in folding
origami paper, building lego blocks and other fine motor exercises. Hal helps fold the towels in the
morning as well as preparing fruits for snacks.
3. Social/Emotional Development
Our focus this period is to encourage the children to build self-confidence and independence.
They are also building and nurturing relationships and are learning to develop self-resolution
skills. These skills are built through daily interaction with their classmates and teachers.
Hal loves being surrounded by his friends at any time of the day. He is well liked by everyone as he is
sympathetic, kind and is always thinking of how he can help others. Many of the younger students also
like playing with him because he is funny and gentle towards them. When he encounters uncomfortable
situations, He usually approaches the teachers for help, yet, recently he attempts sorting it out on his own
before telling an adult. Hal’s self assurance and confidence is admirable.
4. Cognitive Development
Cognitive Development involves the progressive building of learning skills such as attention,
memory and thinking. These crucial skills enable the children to process sensory information, and
eventually learn to analyze, remember, make comparisons, and understand cause and effect.
Hal loves working with math concepts and numeracy. He can perform 1-2 digit addition and subtraction
with minimal use of manipulatives. He is also fond of randomly quizzing his teacher's some addition
problem and who can answer correctly. He has a good grasp of time concepts such as yesterday, today
and tomorrow as well as the sequence of months of the year and days of the week. Hal is attentive during
circle time and class discussions.
