A high school teacher wants to investigate the average sleep duration of ABM (Accountancy, Business,
and Management) students in their class. The reported population mean sleep duration for ABM
students is 5.4 hours. The teacher randomly selected 8 students from their class and recorded the
number of hours each student sleeps per day. The teacher decides to conduct a one-tailed t-test at a
significance level of 0.10 to determine if the average sleep duration of their students is significantly
higher from the reported population mean.
The recorded sleep duration data for the selected students is presented in the table below:
𝒙 (𝒙 − 𝒙̄ ) (𝒙 − 𝒙̄ )𝟐
5.2 -0.3625 0.1314
4.9 -0.6625 0.4389
7.1 1.5375 2.3639
6.0 0.4375 0.1914
5.5 -0.0625 0.0039
4.8 -0.7625 0.5814
5.7 0.1375 0.0189
5.3 -0.2625 0.0689
Sample Mean:

𝑥̄ = 5.5625

𝑠 = 0.7367
𝑑𝑓 = 𝑛 − 1
𝑑𝑓 = 8 − 1
𝑑𝑓 = 7
Then, we refer to the t-distribution table to find the critical value. Based on the table,
with 0.10 significance level and df of 7, the critical t-value is 1.4149.
𝑡𝑎
This means that if the computed test statistic falls outside the non-critical region or
greater than 1.4149, then the null hypothesis will be rejected.
Step 4 – Calculate the Test Statistics
Based on the sample data and the hypothesis test, there is not enough evidence to
conclude that the average sleep of ABM students in a day is significantly higher from 5.4
hours at the 0.10 level of significance.
