Chapter 5. Introduction to Parasitology
Activity Title. Organisms found in the Pond

I. Watch the video entitled “Organisms found in the Pond” using this link
https://youtu.be/mXqyCNAYrH4 and answer the question.

a. What are the organisms found in the pond?

- Protozoa, Stentor, Daphnia, Planaria, Hydra.
b. Explain the characteristics of each organisms.

- Protozoa are unicellular eukaryotic microorganisms without a cell wall that

are members of the Kingdom Protista. Asexual reproduction is
accomplished through fission, schizogony, or budding in protozoa. Some
protozoa can reproduce sexually as well.
- Stentor. When stretched, the body is highly contractile and trumpet-shaped
or cylindrical. The genus's species are often huge (up to 2 mm long). The
narrower end of the body may be temporarily linked to the substratum by a
holdfast, and sedentary behavior is its normal way of life.
- Daphnia are planktonic crustaceans of the Phyllopoda (also known as
Branchiopoda), with flattened leaf-like legs that generate a water stream for
the filtering system.
- Land planarians are soft, bilaterally symmetric, acoelomate, dorsally-
ventrally flattened worms that range in size from 3 to 50 cm in length and
0.2 to 0.5 cm in width. They lack a skeleton, a respiratory and circulatory
system, and an anus. Many land planarians have enlarged lunate heads or
taper to a blunt tip.
- Hydra is a phylum Cnidaria genus that consists of tiny, multicellular,
cylindrical, fresh-water animals. They are small, tube-shaped bodies with
numerous tentacles on one end.
