Your representation – for Quality and Fairness in your studies

Welcome to WU.
This is your first semester at WU, everything is new, everything is confusing. Many of you come straight from High
School, a place where you knew your terrain and how things work. But do not worry, starting university is not as
frightening as you might think and we are here to support you along the way.
With so many online-tools and abbreviations, it is almost impossible not to feel overwhelmed. Therefore, we gathered
some tips and created an overview of things you should know while studying at WU.

However, you don't have to remember all the information on here right away, just take your time and explore WU - the
digital WU platforms and the Campus - yourself and get settled for your first semester!

All that is left for us to say is to enjoy your semester and your time at WU.

LPIS - Registering your courses

Perhaps some of you have already heard of the infamous Atomuhr (atomic watch), and all WU Students know it is a
state of mind. Yet there is good news: While BBE students still battle it out for the best time slots, you could lean back
and enjoy the fact that a place is reserved for you in your introductory- and main phase courses. Therefore, let's take
a moment to appreciate the luxury.

LPIS is the acronym for the insufferably long word "Lehrveranstaltungs-und Prüfungsinformationssystem" and
helps you register for all your courses. In addition to that, you will also see your final grades in this tool.
As you have seen by now, this system is rather important for your studies. Therefore, we would like to show you all
the basics when it comes to using LPIS. Click here to access it directly.

courses. Make sure to check your MyLEARN account regularly to not miss any exercises, assignments or deadlines. Here you can download
slides or reading materials for your next lecture, upload assignments and even take online exams. The overview you see here is the login

CBK European Credit Transfer System (Points)

ECTS
ECTS(-Points) refer to the amount of work you will have to put into a course. The rule of thumb is: 1 ECTS = 25h of work. The
grade does not matter here, as long as you passed the entire course. You need to hit a certain amount of ECTS to apply for
Specializations or Semesters abroad.

International Summer University

ISU During summer, there is a possibility to attend courses at a foreign university to gain international experience and ECTS. This
is not same as the Summer University (see below). BBE Students take advatage of the ISU as well.

Lernwoche - Study week

Lernwoche The week before the exam week, which usually gives rise to increased studying, more panic and less free space in the library.
The week where most exams are held. In the german program this might mean several exams in a single week, however it does
not exist in that extent in BBE, as the exams are more dispersed.

Lehrveranstaltungsprüfung - Course Examinations

LVP Large scale final exams for lecture/teaching events (LV). LVs do not have attendance requirements. They take place during the
exam week. You have to sign up seperately for the course (LV) and the exam (LVP). You will rarely, if ever, encounter this format
in BBE.

Matr. -Nr. Matrikelnummer - Student ID number

This number is your identification as a student. It will not change, even if you change to a different University.

Österreichische HochschülerInnenschaft - Students Union

ÖH The ÖH is your representation of interest, present at each University. Elections are held every two years.
At WU this is the ÖH WU. Lead by the Vorstand (Board) and several Referenten (department heads). Additionally, ÖH WU has a
staff of over 120 volunteers supporting students at WU.
Lehrveranstaltungen mit immanentem Prüfungscharakter - Continous Assesment Courses

PI
In this course type, you will be graded on several performance components. One component can be homework, a presentation,
attendance, a mid-term or a final exam. Attendance is required and are usually held in smaller groups. You do need to sign up for
the final exam seperately, if there is any. This is the main type of course you will encounter in BBE.

Prüfungswoche - Exam week

PW The week where most exams are held. In the german program this might mean several exams in a single week,
however it does not exist in that extent in BBE, as the exams are more dispersed.

Spezielle Betriebswirtschaftslehren - Specialisations

SBWL or Once you have collected over 42 ECTS you can start applying for your specialisations (after your 2nd or 3rd Semester usually).
You can choose any of the Specialisations available for BBE (currently about 26, might change), that interest you. Most are worth

SPECS 20 ECTS, some are worth 10 ECTS. Just make sure you finish specialisations worth 40 ECTS in total.
You should still get an overview of all specialisations available in due time, else you will find them all on the WU website.

Studieneingangs- und Orientierungsphase – Introductory phase

STEOP
The courses in the introductory phase are the first courses you have to pass, before you are eligible to take any others in the main
program phase. In BBE there are only two courses in the Steop : Contemporary Challenges in Business and Economics, and Business
and Society. Quantitative methods I is not part of the Intorductory phase, but can be taken at the same time, despite not having
already passed the STEOP.

Sommeruni/Winteruni - Summeruni/Winteruni

SU As part of a study acceleration program created by ÖH WU, students of the German speaking programs (WIRE and WISO), they can
take some of their normal courses in September/February to finish their studies faster. There are no courses offered for BBE
students.
Lecture with interactive elements

VUE This type of course provides a greater flexibility due to the interactive elements that are incorporated in the lectures which requires active
participation. Decisive for the final grade are at least two performance components. If you were graded negatively, you can also repeat the
performance in case you achieved at least 10% of the total points. This type of course is common in BBE.

WIRE
Wirtschaftsrecht - Business Law
One of the German bachelor programs at WU. Focused on law & business.

Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaften - Economics and Social Sciences
